Actually, how bloody big are you really????...

all together? i live in godley (which is in hyde) and im convinced that people from newton (also in hyde) are inbred lol

its the common enemy thing we'll meet someone from somewhere else and it'll be "well we're all from manchester" or meeting someone from essex "well we're all northern"... unless you're with a scouser i'll never band together with a scouser

To me the borough of Manchester does not represent the city of Manchester as a whole, there is a whole lot more to it.

I live in Timperley in Trafford, but i'm metres away from Wythenshawe's Manchester borough boarder with Trafford.

To me Manchester is: the borough of Manchester, Trafford (yes Trafford), Salford, some parts of Tameside (like Droylesden), some parts of Stockport, some parts of Bury (Prestwich and Whitefield), some parts of Rochdale (Middleton), some parts of Oldham (Chadderton) etc...

Outside these areas is where the accents start to change in one way or another.

But between these areas there is no distinguishing differences between the accents or the people. What's the difference between people who live in Whalley Range and Old Trafford, between Chorlton and Stretford, between Brunage and Heaton Mersey, between Higher Broughton and Cheetham Hill? Most of us spend our time, going on nights out, watching out football team, shopping in the area we call "town"...Manchester.

I do not, however, consider Bolton and Wigan as part of Manchester.

So the population of this area would be about, what, 2.2 million?

They're the posh ones!

The Broomwood, The Grange, Broadheath, Oldfield Brow, The Racecourse, Sale Moor; aren't posh.

Agreed with this. There's all the stuff within the city boundaries (as per the map) and then there's the immediate places next to the boundaries (mainly the M postcodes) such as Whitefield, Droylsden, Denton, Failsworth etc. It's after these sort of areas as you go further out and the accent changes (Bury, Oldham, Ashton etc.) that Manchester ceases. To the west, most Salfordians don't like to class themselves with us for some reason.

bloody hell shafter you missed dukinfield, the famous dukinfield named after the roundhead colonel robert dukinfield who was ordered by cromwell to capture the isle of mann from the cavaliers, his reward the boro of dukinfield what a shithouse trick that was by cromwell, no wonder they dug him up and hung him? see we have more history than the scousers?

Salford is not and never been part of Manchester mate.If someone asks where I'm from I say Salford, the reply is normally oh Manchester which I find annoying.Salford is a city in it's self, you will find anyone born in Salford and they'd say the same mate.

My girlfriend is from Salford, initially from Chimney Pot Park, then later Little Hulton. She says she's from Salford in Manchester and feels as if it is all one, as i do.

Where does the boarder of Higher Broughton and Cheetham Hill begin and end? What are the differences in the people of Ordsall and Old Trafford?neither of these are in the borough of Manchester, but to me they are both Mancunian! How is it Salford's city centre or "town" is Manchester city centre (it isn't Salford precinct is it?)? A large part of Manchester city centre is in Salford. There is no real seperation of the two cities for me. We all speak with the same accent and all share a twin city.

Years ago Manchester was considered part of Salford (Salfordshire) because Salford was the bigger more powerful district, now it is vice-versa, to me at least.

Tony H Wilson otherwise known as 'Mr Manchester' was from Salford and always made a point of saying so and correcting people who sais he was Manchester.

Personally I thought he was a tw@t but at least the fella knew where he was from.

My girlfriend is from Eccles and tells people she is from Salford. Her dad however also from Eccles (born and bred) tells people he is from Manchester because when he was born Eccles was in Manchester.

If I was from Salford then I suppose I too would tell people I was from Salford. Luckily I was born in Wythenshaw and so don't have such an embarrassing problem.

as an eccles lad myself, i am confused about this myself. i also thought that when i was born, eccles was manchester, then there was a strange period where manchester and salford disputed eccles (in a bad way - "no it's yours"), before it was decided that eccles was now in salford.
so i was born in hope hospital but raised in eccles but i see myself as a manc. am i wrong?
