All those comparing it to other sentences, his lack of remorse, the abuse of his celebrity and his attitude towards the court and the process, will very much have gone against him.

Yeah don't necessarily disagree but surely a crime is a crime so the time should be the time. I don't think it should make one iota of difference if were talking about a personality in the public eye or dirty old Derek off main street. They essentially present the same danger. For me we should have tariffs depending on plea eg

Guilty plea - Crime - Not guilty plea

25 years - murder - 50 years
20 years - rape - 30 years

etc etc

I certainly don't feel sorry for him. He's been such a twat I would find that impossible. But I do think that sentence sounds pretty harsh compared to some sentences you hear about for all sorts of stuff, some things that might be considered worse than what he did. Although I suppose that is very much subjective talking about one crime being worse than another.

Think less about the sex acts and more about the predatory grooming when he knew her age,i think that is a large part of it and why you can't compare it to another sexual case

In this case he used his celebrity as a way of influencing a child who was under age, so it has to be taken into consideration. If she hadnt known who he was I would agree that it shouldnt make a difference, but in this case it does.

Also the plea does effect sentencing, but some of the legal experts on the board would be better placed to comment on this. We have a number of barristers and solicitors on here.

He didn't help himself by letting this go to court, and putting the girl through a trial, its pretty clear he knew exactly what he was doing, and simply didn't give a f*ck.

Do you understand how they carry out sentencing?

They have various categories (1-3 and A or B) of seriousness for any offence depending on culpability and other factors. Each combination has a starting point and recommended range and allows the judge to consider various aggravating and mitigating circumstances.

For Category 1A of the offence for which he was found guilty (which covers a blow job or other penetration) the starting point is 5 years in prison and the recommended range is 4-10 years. One of the aggravating factors considered is acting from a position of trust, which was no doubt taken into account but that's just one and the judge mentioned others.

Footballer Adam Johnson has been sentenced to six years for grooming and sexual activity with a girl aged 15.

Johnson, 28, was found guilty of sexual touching but cleared of one charge relating to another sexual act following a trial at Bradford Crown Court.

The former Sunderland winger previously admitted grooming the girl and one charge of sexual activity.

Judge Jonathan Rose said the girl had "suffered severe psychological harm".

He told the England international that she had "suffered threats and thousands of abusive remarks" on social media.

Judge Rose told Johnson there had been "an abuse of trust - you are trusted by young fans to behave properly".

He said: "She had only just turned 15 when you began grooming her, because, as you were to admit, you found her sexually attractive."

He added that the footballer's intention had been to engage in sexual activity with her, knowing that she was under 16.

Capital punishment is a deterrent and should be used. Why should I, a tax payer, fund the prison sentence of people like the Ripper, Ian Huntly etc. I would happily push the button
