"Adebayor will be among the top-earners at White Hart Lane, but City will subsidise the 28-year-old's wage, having paid him £175,000 per week."

"It is understood Spurs refused to break their strict wage structure to accommodate Adebayor. But with the player refusing to accept a big pay-cut, the Premier League champions were forced to accept having to continue to pay the player the difference between his new wage of around £80,000 and his earnings at City in order to complete the deal."

you can put that up on here 10 more times, still wont make it right. when a player leaves a club his contract with the selling club is cancelled, it would be illegal for two clubs to pay one players wage when he only has a contract at the buying club

I thought Leeds continued to pay a number of players' salaries after they sold them, including Fowler's...while he was with City:

Quote from guardian article:

"...Ridsdale's Leeds may have briefly rubbed shoulders with the best in Europe but the club's directors continued to live a life of luxury as their team subsequently spiralled down the Premiership table. The club spent £70,000 in one year on private jets for directors and senior management, handed out £300,000 a year to charity despite announcing losses of £33m in the last financial year, and still contribute £500,000 a year to Robbie Fowler's wages despite selling him to Manchester City in January.."

It seems fairly obvious we cannot have Adebayor still on the payroll while his registration is owned by another club. However, I would not rule out we gave him a huge pay off to get him away from the club. This is probably accounted for as some kind of "bonus / loyalty payment" and is not uncommon.

When players / agents are negotiating contracts they don't negotiate on the weekly salary, those figures are just used in the press to make the figures seem all the more outrageous. They negotiate on annual salary, so say he's on 8m a year gross at City, if we give him a 4m pay off and Spuds pay him 4m a year, then the press can say we're paying half his wages.

Not sure why people can't understand that rather than spurs paying 10m for him they've give City 5m and Ade 5m signing on fee to cover his loss of wages.
