Adverts that drive you mad

So the adverts with Welsh voices should be less common.

Or just regionalised. Why do the good folk of England have to hear Rob Brydon or people from the Valleys doing voiceovers?

It's not representative.
and....?

There are some, many even, welsh voice overs that may be disproportionate to the population mix, that is a choice the advertisers make. But it will be disproportionate by a percentage, a small percentage. The mix of couples is the exact opposite, I'd wager the representation of mixed couple would be in the order of 95%+ in adverts and that is not the society we live in.

As somebody in an interracial marriage who works in marketing, I feel somewhat qualified to speak on this.

The reason companies do this, as always, is purely based on what works for them economically - it’s pretty simple. They have absolutely no desire to “accurately represent their customer demographics”, that is not their objective, why would it be? They are trying to sell as much stuff as possible.

It’s not that white couples are somehow “bad”, it’s that they are completely neutral in a marketing sense. Whereas, having people from minority backgrounds in your adverts does have a psychological (somewhat subconscious) benefit when trying to attract a broader audience. It is human nature to feel more connected to entities where you appear to be represented and there are people associated who look like you or share your culture.

It’s essentially a free hit, there is no real downside to having people of different races in your adverts, but there is an economic benefit, so the better question is why wouldn’t you do it?

When my wife and I see these adverts we find it quite funny mostly, because it’s just so transparently cynical. But, as the saying goes, if it’s stupid and it works then it ain’t stupid.

Yes but why should English people with a strong dislike of the Welsh accent and culture have to listen to it though?

You can have your regional adverts and not bother people who don't have an unhealthy interest in ruminants.

That KFC advert for a Teriyaki burger with some woman saying it’s called a “Barryaki” (?) burger. Who the f is she? It feels key to whether it’s funny or not.

There’s a lot of English accents that aren’t represented in voice overs at all.
Eg Brummie.

Adverts want to sell, Brydon’s voice is I presume thought of as a good selling voice
