Afghanistan

Well he’s taking the flack because he was warned and warned to either delay or abandon plans to leave and he ignored them.

I listened to a former Colonial who oversaw British operations in Afghanistan for years say the blame is squarely at Biden’s feet here.

The fact he brushed off people falling to their deaths from clinging on to US planes as “yeah that was 5 days ago” shows what a contemptible person he is.

I feel sorry for the young lads and lasses that served there.
Rubbish. Our plans were totally inadequate to get people out. We knew the deadline but failed to act.

Alas unless we're prepared to commit a large part of our armed forces into Afghanistan then when the U.S. pulls out so must we, the place is a basket case and personally I'd be loathed to put any more British lives at risk in a hopeless cause. Our European comrades don't seem to keen on leaning a hand either and the Afghans didn't exactly throw themselves into defending their new way of life . All we can do now is help out best we can unless the Yanks or more likely the cavemen now in charge say that's it and be well rid of the place.

In other news...

We keep being told that leaving Afghanistan was always going to be a total mess. Well ... France started evacuations May 10 — moving Afghan employees first, not leaving them for dead — and now has spare capacity to help others, including EU colleagues and locals’ @politico

Any blame at all for Biden?

Biden takes the blame, because he is in charge. Fact remains that over 18 months ago the US signed a peace deal in which they committed to withdrew forces by May of this year.

Biden extended this to end of August, but this decision to withdraw was flagged months in advance. Overconfidence in the stability and effectiveness of the Afghan Govt and military has led to the current chaos. And ‘overconfidence’ is putting it politely.

The French started evacuation in May and were widely criticised as it indicated a lack of confidence in the Afghan Govt.

The real blame is the failure by the US and allies after twenty years of occupation, only to end up with a Govt and military that lasted about twenty minutes.

Aye, the whole thing seems so rushed considering this was announced under Trump.

It’s mad how quickly they fell!

Once everyone possible is out of Afghanistan I think you can safely say the USA will be drone bombing specific sites. I think they will target the hardware left behind.

I spent many, many years in positions of responsibility - my view on any project was 'hope for the best, prepare for the worst'. You should go through every feasible scenario and prepare.

I figure our lot only did the former.

The yank have sent some troops home saying they dont need them there , i would have thought for safety they would have stayed till the end of the week

High up here are saying a terrorist attack at the airport is highly likely , i would have thought it was not the day to remove troops , biden is really fucking this up

As in terms of this shitshow happening on his watch then yeah he and his predecessor should be in the firing line. Then again somebody somewhere the the line was going to have to face the reality of the lie.

But then again we wouldn't have Bush and Blair without Carter/Reagan where does the blame game end up Carry on up the Khyber?

The offensive missions certainly have a bearing on the current situation, but with the military in full retreat it shows the lengths the current US administration is going to try and get as many people out as possible.
Not playing any blame games it is a collective failure over multiple administrations and their 'clandestine operations ' in the region.

To what end? CIA clandestine operations in the region are why we are where we are.
No doubt they'll be doing supply runs to the 'resistance'.

It's classic CIA - who is my enemy: Taliban, solution: arm the resistance.

Who is now my enemy: resistance, solution: arm the Taliban..
