So when you get down to it he has said they can wear a burka of they want , but they look like post boxes or bank robbers . I personally think they look like the nija turtles . I have also noted that he has said the koran does not say women should were them and he is correct . the man is a buffoon but on this occasion its much ado about nothing .

So he was talking about vaginas then?

The wearing of a burka or similar is cultural not religious. They do not look like bank robbers or post boxes anymore than nuns look like penguins. Johnson has no interest in Muslim women other than using them to telegraph his anti-Muslim credentials ahead of the much anticipated Tory leadership contest whilst also brushing his ‘liberal’ credentials by saying they can wear them if they wish. It’s an article that is deliberately designed to stir a rancid debate between predominantly middle aged white men on how they feel uncomfortable talking to women in a burka and (bizarrely) how you wouldn’t want to see them in the pub. I’ve yet to hear from Muslim women on the subject, apart from Baroness Warsi, as to how they feel on the subject.

I personally am not a fan of a cultural norm that requires women to be covered in such a way and there is a debate to be had on cultural and male pressure on women to conform to a dress code but Johnson is not engaging in or even interested in that debate. Johnson as per usual is just stirring up shit without regard for consequences which is all Johnson ever does.

this.

he can be for or against women's right to choose what they wear, or pro or anti burka. what he shouldn't be doing is comparing them to bank robbers or post boxes. but he knows exactly what he's doing, and it's dog whistle racism.

i could say his hair makes him look like someone who would force a lover into an abortion but that doesn't mean its true. although...

I'm surprised it's took this long for that buzzphrase to appear, what with most things that are not right with the world being the fault of middle aged white men.

He’s correct but not politically correct. They do look ridiculous. It’s a difficult line to tread cos if it leads to more hate crimes against hijab wearers then he’s made a big mistake but at the same time, if he makes a few more full-face veil wearers think ‘you know what, I look terrible’ then it could be a good thing. Also, excessive political correctness often breeds more contempt and tension among communities than if politicians just came out and said what most normal people think - something that the PC brigade fail to understand. It would be another bad day for individual liberty if the full-face veil was banned but the idea that you can wear what you want in society has never existed anyway so I sometimes wonder whether relations between Muslims and non-Muslims would be better if it was just banned because, until it is, it will remain a sticking point for non-Muslims and they will continue to identify Islam with the extreme parts of the religion and culture.

Next the tattoos and piercings will be banned ? They look ridiculous too.

I’m not surprised that it didn’t take long for someone to be triggered by the phrase.

Given that ‘white middle aged men’ also includes myself I’m comfortable enough to acknowledge my own lack of first hand experience on the issue so lets not pretend we are horrified at the suggestion.

Some tattoos and piercings look ridiculous, I agree. But there are many more valid reasons for banning niqabs and burkhas (which is what I meant instead of Hijabs) other than whether or not it is fashionable. Some people see it as a symbol of oppression, some people think it stunts integration, some people think it makes it extremely difficult for said wearers to get a job and support themselves financially, some people see it as a security issue (which it has proven to be), some people (myself included) think it will always be a problem for community relations and is a recruitment tool for groups who hate Muslims. Personally speaking, of all the problems in society, the banning or non-banning of the burkha and niqab is low down on my list of priorities and I really have no strong feeling either way but for a lot of people, it really pisses them off and their antipathy towards it can sometimes lead them to supporting more extreme policies that affect more than 0.1% of Muslims.
