Exactly. It's a typical defence from bigots who are trying to appeal to an audience that they hope doesn't understand context or nuance. I guess in isolation and from somebody who doesn't know any better, I can sort of see how the letterbox remark might be a light-hearted joke. It wasn't though, it was pretty obvious dog whistling from somebody with form for racist remarks who has been cosying up to Steve Bannon. Furthermore, whether you think it's a funny joke or not, it's a snidey comment from a public figure (who was our foreign secretary up until a few weeks ago) that's taking a taking a swipe at a group (Muslim women) who are already on the receiving end of a disproportionate amount of violence and abuse from cowards wanting to take aim at their religion. Hardly a great target for a joke. He's a ****.
