Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has spent more money than any House Democrat seeking reelection this year, building a massive political team and an even bigger money machine.

An analysis of the freshman firebrand's prodigious spending shows Ocasio-Cortez has nearly 40 staffers on her campaign, with 30 having been hired in 2020 — a staff size more typical of a top-tier Senate campaign than a congresswoman seeking reelection in a safely progressive seat.

Ocasio-Cortez had spent $6.3 million through June 3, according to her latest FEC report, sixth overall among House candidates.

Just two years after she pulled off a stunning upset over a veteran lawmaker, Ocasio-Cortez has become a magnet for small-dollar donors. She has raised more than $10.5 million, about 80 percent of which came from donors giving under $200, the FEC reports show.

How is she doing politically? I saw the original Netflix doc and thought she was very impressive. Have tried to keep up to date with her career but you seldom get the real perspective from across the Atlantic.

I don't really keep up with her much either, especially this year. She's across the country from me (just as far away from me as you almost!). What's impacting me are the decisions local and CA state politicians make re: the COVID shutdown. As we've learned from our President and many others, rhetoric doesn't fight a virus too well; action's all that matters.

One of most impressive young politicians in the world right now. Said it before and I'll say it again, there is no one in British politics - left or right -which comes close to her.

How has it been in California? Controlled or Scary?

Disagree, I think Starmer is a very serious individual and whilst he’s got his work cut out for him, he’s very impressive and knows when to support the government and when not to.

In the Bay Area, heavily, heavily controlled. Less so state-wide but more restrictive than many states. We are back state-wide to mandatory masks when in public, but we are beginning to open up. Bay Area more heavily-regulated than the state overall (counties are free to come up with their own, stricter rules if they like). Restaurants in Bay Area here outdoor only, e.g. Absolutely no bars, large gatherings, massages, etc.

As a vignette, barber shops will reopen next week so I can get my first haircut since February. Very strict rules -- only barber and one customer allowed in the shop, no blow-drying (not applicable to me), 15 mins between appointments for clean-up/disinfecting workstation, masks on at all times.

Idaho did surprisingly well I thought, Our republican governor took it seriously, way more so than a lot of Red States. Unfortunately everything reopened and with the proximity of Yellowstone we are getting bombarded with tourists from all over the country and we are getting spikes all over the place. One of my employees has to take some time off waiting for some other people’s test results.....and so it goes

I think our response has been an utter disaster as a nation but it was always going to be hard to mount a coordinated defense given how much decision-making is made on a state and local level in the US, as well as the rampant politicization of the issue from day one.

I personally think there is not a chance to return to normalcy nationally until 2022 at the earliest, more likely 2023.

Wow. Thats pretty pessimistic if realistic. I had hoped that we would have a vaccine by early next year and things get back to a new normal by the summer of 2011.

Being a baldy has its pros. A quick 5 mins with the clippers every couple of weeks sees me right. Hairdressers still not open in Scotland. I think it will be mid July until that happens. We are at phase 2 of a 4 phase lockdown relax. Officially, we are expected to stay 'local' within 5 miles of home although that particular rule is being widely breached. Its cary out only for us although they have been flirting with the idea of reopening beer gardens and the like. Return to schools is a bit of a shambles UK wide.
