The first question that needs answering is what was their pomp?
Ali was probably denied his by being banned from the sport and being jailed for refusing to go to Vietnam and his famous 'I Ain't Got No Quarrel With The VietCong...No VietCong Ever Called Me ******.' line. Before he was banned he beat great fighters like Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Archie Moore and schooled Ernie Tyrell who was a belt holder, who refused to call him Ali in the build up and Ali hitting him and screaming 'whats my name' throughout the fight in a savage beating, he was unbeaten before his issues with the establishment. Ali came back from his 3 year hiatus, which should have been the period of his physical prime, he suffered his first loss aged 29 to Frazier, a hall of fame and top 10 heavyweight of all time. He still went on to beat genuine world class and hall of fame fighters in probably his more famous victories, including revenge against Frazier and Foreman, the latter was every bit as much of an animal as Tyson, and hit the heavy bag as hard as anyone in the sport ever has, he was a physical beast, and a past his prime Ali beat him.
Tyson, was an animal of that there is no doubt and he was dominant for a couple of years. If his pomp was the years between beating an old Trevor Berbick to win his first world title and his shock loss to Buster Douglas, the names arent a who's who of boxing. Berbick was over the hill, the best 2 names are probably Michael Spinks who was really a light heavyweight who was at the end of his career and Larry Holmes who came out of retirement, hadnt boxed for nearly 3 years and promptly retired again. In this period he was known as unstoppable but he struggled passed Bonecrusher Smith and Tony TnT Tucker, who were good but nowhere near the hall of fame fighters that Ali beat. He was 24 when he lost to Buster Douglas in one of the sport's biggest shocks and Douglas was certainly no Joe Frazier. He then struggled passed Razor Ruddock before his own troubles, the signs he was on the wane were there before his incarceration, which too was for 3 years. As for Tyson's second reign after his own hiatus, he was nowhere near the fighter or beast he was before, and lost to the first really good boxer he fought in Evander Holyfield, he was never the same again.
Ali was a great fighter, widely regarded as the best heavyweight of all time and one of the greatest fighters of any weight, Tyson rarely features in the top 10 heavyweight list, let alone the all weights lists, that says it all really. Lennox Lewis is normally ranked higher than Tyson, it is claimed that Tyson was shot when he fought Lewis, Lewis is older than Tyson and at least they are of the same generation. Tyson ducked Lewis for years as he knew he wouldnt get passed Lennox's jab, certainly lesser boxers than Lewis troubled Tyson in his so called peak. Lewis is one of 3 world heavyweight champions to have beaten every fighter he ever faced before retirement and in my opinion would have given Ali a much harder fight than Tyson. Its all opinions though.
