All Time Top 1100 Albums (Aerosmith - Big Ones) P265

A pleasant listen, with "Think" being the standout track. Not much variety and having what is regarded by most as a "good" or "powerful" voice isn't enough to carry a whole album for me (although it seems to work commercially for plenty of artists). I realise she is regarded as the Queen of Soul for good reason, but it's not for me. Also, I prefer artists who write their own words and music.

I've listened to the album and whilst I like her as a singer, u don't think it's a great album. Her voice is immense and the first couple of tracks show it to perfection.

It is always harder to look back in time and I wasn't around when the album was made. It sounds to my untrained ear like a collection of good songs that can be listened to in isolation. Nothing wrong with that but it sounds to me like it was from about 64ish, pre Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper.

It's a good album and there's no doubting her voice or impact. I just found that it was a bit one paced.

I feel slightly conflicted on this album.

'Think' is a fucking brilliant song and better than I remember it (is there a newer re-recorded version where it has more glaring saxophones and the like?). The more stripped back and refined version, I am all over that - brilliant opening to the album.

Against my usual instincts I like the short length tracks on it (normally doesn't do it for me but it works for me on this album).

When listening to some of the tracks, I can feel slightly transported back to like a mid'60's smokey club in Manhattan or the like (probably a very lazy Hollywood stereotype as this pre-dates me a fair bit being born in '86) but you get the picture.

I did enjoy the album but how highly can I score an album that it is pretty much a covers album with a couple of tracks that I won't actively hunt for again?

I want to like it like a 7, but I think I would hedge it around the 5.5-6 mark - so a 6...........

Edit: I do love her voice

If I’m ever near enough the radio when a song of Aretha Franklin comes on I’ll more than likely turn it off before she sings in her shouty way, then shouts some more as if we can’t hear her in the first place.. If I ever feel the need to be shouted at I’d kick the wife in the shin.. Didn’t mind a couple of tracks tho, so it’s a 3/10 from me ..

that could bring her average score right down.
Queen of Soul taking some heavy blows on here!

Oh dear, apologies to her fans, I’m in the minority probably..
My eldest stepson said to me after listening to some of the music I like said “Ant, I think your ears are broken “. :)
