Well . . . this is no greatest hits record, which I might have time for. The problem with “You’re So Vain” is that it doesn’t fit with the rest of the stuff here tonally, thematically nor musically — and that music is a mess: strings one place, tinkly piano bullshit another place, slide guitar here, some counter-culture drum filled with rocks keeping time there. Unfortunately YSV also doesn’t sound as good musically or meaning-wise as I remembered. It’s not the only interesting song here — I enjoyed “The Right Thing To Do”, with a nice “Carly lift” in the chorus which she used in all her best stuff. And “When You Close Your Eyes” has some appeal. When she’s singing about some guy who loves or left her, there’s a different lilt in her voice which conveys something. But a good number of these lyrics sound like random passages read from her children’s books, or were apparently written in the back of a cab on the way to the studio. And the tunes — ugh. I mean UGGGGHHHH. “Waited So Long”, musically, is well-suited to the world’s worst Fleetwood Mac cover band. The awful “Night Owl” is the kind of song that drives people out of bars. And the rest are nearly as cringeworthy. The 70s live on through this collection, I guess, but it’s also an excellent reminder of what was shit about that decade. 2/10.
