And the best Manchester band is?

I love Oasis but I don't think they're that great if that makes sense. Stone Roses followed by the Smiths and then James for me.

The Roses were iconic at the time, but two records isn't enough to be considered the greatest when you look at the creative output of the likes of the smiths, new order, james, et al.

It'd have to go to the Smiths for me.

Can't believe how many people have said the fall. Awful band, and Mark E Smith is one of the most horrible loathsome men on earth. Fully deserving of the slap I once administered to him.

Ooh,aren't you the hardman?
The Fall are not awful, although I grant you MES can be a bell end on occasion.

Hardly. He could barely stand and the slap was more to create some kind of boundary so that he understood referring to me as "that Paki" for the rest of the night wasn't going to fly.

As for the Fall not being awful. This is one of those moments where I'll plead that music is highly subjective and you are as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. It's just that I get paid for my opinions on music ... :)

As I say Billy, the man can be an infuriating cock at times, and if he was being an utter racist tool then my only advice would be to slap him harder.
He has rather turned into a sad parody of himself of late, and I understand totally why folk don't 'get' The Fall, but at their peak they were mesmerising.
Or not :)

Would you put Joy Division in with the Roses as their output was also small?

I agree Billy but i asked the question not on the singles sold, albums made, or the bands longevity.

Simply,( in the opinion of each poster) who is the best band to have come from Manchester?

Yeah. Same with Nirvana if we were talking bands in general. I find it hard to elevate those who burn brightly but for a very short time to the same status as those who deliver album after album of musical bliss and who's career is a journey they take their audience on.

They released a lot of great tracks and didn't sound like anyone else before them. Granted, they should have gone on and released more though. The Smiths were probably better to be fair but I grew up with the Roses (not literally) so I'm biased.
