Best from the past has to be The Smiths.
I loved Joy Division/New Order too. But The Smiths get my vote.

Of the current lot I'm going to say Elbow. I'll probably get shot down in flames for saying that. But as someone has already said, music taste is subjective. I for one couldn't care less if I never hear another Oasis track. I actually walked away from their last ever live performance, and I do not regret it.
Elbow aren't from Manchester, they're from Bury

They were listed in the original post. Also wouldn't it be fair to say it's part of Greater Manchester? Or are we going to get all anal about it?

The greatest and most successful Manchester band from your list was , without any shadow of a doubt , the Bee Gees ....... absolute legends.

Except that they weren't really a Manchester group , despite spending their early years living in the Chorlton area of the city .....

they were actually from the Isle of Man !

Yep , i agree it is a personal choice .....

but those guys were in business for FIFTY years , 220 million records sold , and around 2,000 songs written for other artistes ...... and a lot of those songs reached number one.

Barry Gibb remains one of the best songwriters in the world ......
