Not an Anti semitic...... More like anti zionist salute.
So why do people do it outside synagogues and Jewish schools? It's the easiest thing in the world to say its "anti-Zionist". People are quite free to criticise Israel's behaviour openly but when they hide behind a gesture and claim "it's anti-Zionist", everyone knows what they really mean.

To be perfectly honest all this nonsense about who is offended by whoever believes in what fairytale is getting old now.

Israel foreign policy is shit and by and large it's overly aggressive.

And people are surprised that people of Arab descent have got an opinion on that?

Fuck all the religious nutjobs up the bottom with whatever religious artifact is most important to them.

The Pope leads and army of nonces.

The Queen could be a member of the Illuminati.

The grand mufti if he existed again would smell of dates and would probably up the rate of stonings and beheadings if given the chance.

And Israel run a state that's that far right Nick Griffin couldn't get a place in the Knesset because he would be deemed too moderate.

When people who have no thought for religion get to the stage where we can force these crass cultural dinosaurs away from their religious excusism for their hate...the world will be a better place.

Part of me wonders if the FA are leaping on this because they monumentally fucked up the whole Terry-Ferdinand fiasco?

Judaism isn't a race, it is a religion. Assuming that Anelka did mean to have a pop at Judaism or Jews, it would nonetheless be very harsh to label him a racist.

Even anti-Semitic has become a misnomer, given that the term 'Semitic' encompasses a variety of ethnic groups from that region - Arab, Phoenician, Maltese, etc - and not just Israelites/Hebrew.

Too many people leap with labels such as 'racist' and 'anti-Semitic' without really knowing or thinking about what they actually mean.

Nicolas Anelka: West Brom striker wants FA to lift 'quenelle' charge
Nicolas Anelka has called on the Football Association to lift the charge against him for his 'quenelle' gesture.

The West Brom striker faces a minimum five-match ban if found guilty of making an "abusive" sign.

"I ask the FA to lift the charges that have been held against me," he wrote on his Facebook page. "And I repeat, I am neither anti-Semitic nor racist."

It comes as news that several of West Brom's sponsors are considering their relationships with the club.

More to follow.

Well regardless of what we all may think, If Anelka honestly believes that he hasn't done anything wrong, then why wouldn't he fight the charges?
Btw I'm not condoning or condemning him here, I honestly don't know enough about the gesture and it's origins, however I doubt the FA do either.

Anelka knew what he was doing and the gesture IS anti-semetic.

Anelka saying he is giving support to his good friend Dieudonne is like saying "Oh I did the gesture in support of Nick Griffin". Whilst Dieudonne claims to be against racism and even stood against the national front in the 90s, his ant semetic antics have turned him in to a bigot. He's appeared on one of Rober Faurisson's shows who happens to be a holocaust denier. He also describes Holocaust memorial day as "selective pornography".

Everybody is welcome to their opinion on the state of Israel but attacking Jewish people and mocking the holocaust is completely different.

Anelka's defence is very weak and is now resorting to posting a video of a Jewish leader describing the gesture as "not anti semetic". Well that's ok then isn't it? One Jewish man has said it isn't offensive. Well it actually is hence why Dieudonne is banned from performing on tv in France. Dieudonne attacks Jews in his material more than any other subject or group.

His horrible follows are fully aware of that the gesture is anti semetic. Why would they perform them in these locations?

I hope that the greedy twat Anelka gets fined and heavily sued by West Brom for his gesture, he knew full well what he was doing. I use to like him at city as well.

Plus little coverage is given to the fact this game was broadcast in france, which anelka knew before the game, so was deliberately taking advantage of that in full knowledge of how this gesture is perceived in France, where everything you mention above is very widely known.

Funnily enough, this france you speak of have decided against taking action against that comedian as they can't decide whether the gesture is offensive or not, so what's the story here?

Funnily enough he's been prosecuted and found guilty of race hate offences six or seven times and he's banned from performing in most cities. The Interior Ministry has also recently officially linked the gesture to anti-semitism and provided a legal justification for the banning of his performances by French prefectures.
