Would you care to offer some examples of a member of the public having successfully defended themselves from an intruder by using a gun?

I will, but only cos it happened not too long ago and I remember it being reported. Fully justified IMO.

She's obviously a gun-toting maniac deserving of a long prison sentence.

The sheer ignorance of Mammutly's post (which I missed) is breathtaking.
Sure, the massacres get far more screentime and column inches than people protecting themselves and others but that's no excuse. Anyone who ventures into the discussion (esp. with such strong views) over guns and gun laws should have at least done 10 seconds of research. I mean ffs it's a complete fecking joke!

TBH it shouldn't even take any research to know that guns have protected people. Common sense (an overrated virtue most of the time, imo) is enough. And, yes, common sense is also enough to know that guns will be used to murder people.

If you have guns in the house, especially hand guns, there are always going to be tragic accidents and many deaths and injuries occur across the US every year that just wouldn't have happened without the ready availability of such weapons.

There may, very exceptionally, be occasiions when an individual has successfully used a gun for protection, but overall the evidence hardly needs analysis. In countries where public ownership of guns for 'personal protection' has been banned, the murder rate has dropped massively. Australia might be the easiest example, but there are others that are not hard to find - even with the most basic amount of research ;-)

It's a good thing he didn't hit anyone. Like the other innocent bystanders, or a passerby. Why does he have the right to further endanger their lives?

What would you think if he had killed the kid, but it turned out the kids gun wasn't loaded?

They weren't 'kids', they were 19 years old. The gun wasn't loaded but I don't see what difference that makes; they both fully deserved to be shot. It's just a shame his aim wasn't better.

I never said they deserved to be killed, but if you go into somewhere waving a gun and threatening people, you can't really complain when someone shoots you. I'd happily ban all guns tomorrow, but these two clowns got exactly what they deserved.

Indeed, which is why I'd back any ban on firearms. The need to carry guns appalls me, but I can't really have any sympathy for a pair of cunts like that. They went in there with the intention of scaring the shit out of a group of innocent people and ended up scrambling over each other as they shit themselves to get out of the door first. Lovely stuff.

Whilst I am all for tighter gun controls in the states (ours here seem to be ok and even I have/had a firearms license), I find it hard to disagree they were asking for it. I'm still not sure I am happy with the results though as they both could have ended up dead.

It would be easier to just ban scummy humans.
