Because it allows you to move, work and settle freely, specifically free of Govt diktat. It empowers people, liberates them from Govt control.
Freedom of movement for the ordinary citizens of Europe is one of the greatest liberalising moments in European history.
Population is an economic issue. You've recognised that in your first sentence. All those activities are part of GDP. So is running asylum centres. Not letting asylum seekers work doesn't help GDP.And more public spending needed. And more homes and more roads and more....... etc

General consensus on LPF is that UK agrees there will be a cost for Single Market access if we diverge too far from EU norms on labour, environment etc. The objection now is the extent of the cost.
