As someone has already said, it's about money, the likelyhood of the US changing gun laws is as likely as the UK not selling £5bn worth of fighter jets to the Middle East.

They need to have a gun amnesty

They need to look at school and college security, nobody gets in without going through 3 security doors and metal detectors ( or similar heightened security methods)

Only farmers/ people at risk of bear/cougar attacks are allowed to own a basic rifle or shotgun

Only police may carry firearms ( eventually tailing off to only armed specialist response units when majority or illegal and legal firearms are melted down)

Anyone found with a gun who doesn't carry a valid licence faces a mandatory custodial sentence.

Anyone who qualifies for a gun licence must pay for an annual psychological evaluation at their own cost or have licence revoked.

If you want to hunt then only licenced hunting allowed by proper companies.

I think with tweeks the above is what I think should be done.

Amnesty is the first port of call. Get rid of all the legal arms then go Armageddon on the criminals with weapons. I would like to see all those with the basic licence have to surrender their weapons for 6 monthly/annual inspections too ( serial numbers checked and mechanical soundness, I'd also like them to report how many times they have discharged the weapon.

You also need tighter border controls to stop guns getting in from Mexico and Canada

I seriously think that as we get dumber we buy more guns. The NRA is always pushing stories of "heroes" who kill people in self-defense and the dummies out there have dreams that they will be one of these "heroes". Our lawmakers are passing "stand your ground" laws in multiple states that lead to people feeling threatened by minority youths with packets of Skittles and shooting them. We're certainly not getting any smarter so I don't see much hope.
