Any sensible weight loss advice?

You've gotta get some breakfast down you mate. Just have a couple of slices of toast or somehting.

This. Eating your first meal earlier in the day boosts the metabolism, meaning your body works harder for longer in the day to burn the food you eat. Add exercise (half an hour a day is ok - not necessarily running, but just being active) which will also increase your metabolism rate.

Some people find that doing the exercise before eating in the morning, especially cardio, burns the fat reserves that get stored up while you sleep. So basically you are burning nothing but fat. If you are doing your exercise in the morning, drink plenty of water whilst you go. After exercise, eat a banana or two for healthy carbs as the body needs the gluctose to replenish the muscle used whilst doing the cardio.

For the rest of the day eat little but often - every 2-3 hours. Personally I eat my bananas or weetabix at about 8am after a morning run, get to work and eat an apple and some toast at about 10am. Then I'll have a tuna or chicken salad at about midday. At 14:00 I'll eat a chicken breast with a bit of mash or beans and then have a light snack at about 16:00 - usually watermelon and a few grapes. I have whatever I want for me tea at about 19:00 and maybe a light supper at about 22:00 (cottage cheese for a slow burning protein virtually carb free).

Good luck, fella.

Conversely(as I don't have time now), I found that doing exercise, like pushing weights first thing in the morning before eating, worked wonders for me! Eating a breakfast afterwards felt like it didn't sit on my stomach and I had a great energy boost. I also felt stronger throughout the day.

Yeah its a bit weird with the eating after exercise thing. Tends to make me fart, but I work in an office full of women so I have to inject some masculinity in there somehow. The 'feeling stronger' and teh energy boost could also have something to do with the natural high you get from doing cardio/resistance training. I start to flag halfway through the afternoon, so thats why I eat in regular spurts too.

I suppose it could be seen as euphoria, but the actual strength feeling came after a period of constant training. I actually wanted to give it up after 2 days, as I felt so weak, but I got my mind together and pushed through that defeatist wall. After a week of battling your mind, you'd be suprised at what you can make your body go through!

Let's just say my ex, at the time, got the benefit of my training and newfound stamina!

That's good advice.

Although i wouldn't a banana after exercise as fructose cannot be stored as muscle glycogen. The liver processes it in a different way. It will be used to stabalise blood glucose levels, but once it's done it's job here, the rest will get shuttled to fat cells.

Also morning cardio is likely to result in a fair bit of muscle loss, if done on an empty stomach. it does slightly speed up fat loss, because insulin levels are at their lowest and glucagan levels are at their highest after an over-night fast. This increases the amount of fat that leaves fat cells and travels to muscles to be burned for energy. Like i said, downside is the muscle loss due muscle glycogen levels and blood glucose levels being low - your muscles will burn protein for energy, so you'll lose muscle. If you're not into weight-lifting and not arsed about keeping muscle tissue then it's quite effective.

If I may hijack the thread a bit as this is something everyone who exercises goes through....

How the fook can I get motivated?!

Ive packed about a stone on over the last year, cholesterol has gone up etc etc. I work a somewhat manual job, and all I want to do when I get home from work is cabbage. I would love to be able to get my lazy arse out of bed first thing and go for a run, but I start work at 6.30 and just cant (seem to be able to) do it, so its evening exercise unfortunately....

Any tips?

You'll probably hit a point where you can't accept putting on any more weight. Then you'll do something about it. If you've noticed a problem you should start now. It's just one of those things where you have to tough it out. First month might be hard but if you stick past that point, your onto something. Get your diet in check and get some good music on your ipod and get to the gym or get outdoors. You just have to do it. There's no easy way really. Eventually you will enjoy it.

Yeah, I was about to say, if you can't get YOURSELF motivated, you're screwed, cos you'll only start and stop. It's crucial your head needs the reason to sort your body out. You might be stuck in a constant routine where it's just easier to do the simple things. Been there so many times. It took near collapsing cos of sugar overload(apparently it kicked when I had too much champers at my wedding... I don't drink so my body 'went haywire') for me get myself totally healthy.

Other than that, tear yourself away from your comfort zone, stick some good music in your ears and start with having a brisk walk somewhere. Corny as it sounds, it's designed to get you away from the TV, the fridge, etc.

It's difficult cos only you know what 'turns you on', as it were!

Cheers lads, nail on the head right there Bigga, I could go for a couple of mile run one day, then its another week before I do anything else. Finger out time I reckon!

Since I was about 14 or 15 I've been going running five or six nights a week, I'm now almost 44. I would say that the running makes very little difference to my weight, if I have to change that (if I've been ill or something) then I have to do it through changing my diet. The only exercise that I would say does have the capacity to really change someone's weight is cycling, someone who couldn't run or even jog for two hours can usually cycle for two or more hours. Cycling is particularly helpful with someone who's very overweight because the bicycle supports that weight. If your making adjustments to your diet then make small and telling adjustments, for instance if you drink beer and eat cheese, have a week eating cheese without drinking beer, and a week drinking beer without eating cheese, don't just suddenly drop both, your not likely to keep to it.

In the summer I cycle between 70 & 100 miles a week, and the weight drops off. Put a bit of timber on in the winter since its hard to get out in the evenings. 1 1/2 - 2 stone over my ideal weight at the moemnt, but will lose it in the new year, no probs.

Cut out Crack Crisps.
Eat porridge for breakfast.
Cut down on beer and wine.
Start smoking again ( nah, but stopping hasnt helped).
