It's interesting that the Hughes 'doubters' believe that he will go if we don't achieve top 4 this season - based on the premise that it is now attainable. Surely the very fact that a top 4 place is now thought to be possible, is because Hughes has bought well and is creating a team that everyone feels is capable of living with the top 3 or 4.
I base my opinion on what was said by Cook and Hughes before the transfer window closed, something people have conveniently forgotten. Cook said that he and MH had discussed things, and that they went to the owners and suggested that we fast forward the project, as a result we brought in more targets than was originally intended for the summer window.
Since this was well after the 'top 6' target, given at the end of last season/begining of the summer if I remember correctly, I would suggest that top 4 is the target now.
I'm delighted by the two results, and in particular the performance and result against Chelsea (Arsenal reserves isn't really a marker for me), because above the results they suggest we have finally made some progress. However I'll now be expecting the same level of performance against Bolton, and not a reversion to the performances against Burnley, Hull, Wigan, Birmingham, all of which were unacceptable, and would have been even under Stuart Pearce.
In my opinion MH isn't good enough to take us to the level we aim to be at, he'll achieve top 6 this year, possibly even top 4, but if we aim to be kings of Europe in 2 or 3 years (or even 5 for those that demand patience), I very much doubt it will be with MH still in charge, but I really hope he proves me wrong !
