Don't forget Sidwell, Pizarro and Ben Haim were brought in when Red Rom decided not to give Mourinho any more cash.

plus they sold Sidwell and Ben Haim at a profit, Pizarro was a free so no loss..

When it comes down to it, if Sheikh Mansour decides he really wants something, then that's going to be all that matters, just as Roman gets what he wants at Chelsea. Others can try to influence him or change his mind, but ultimately he'll decide. That power is what being the owner effectively gives you.
And I also suspect that he and Khaldoon al Mubabrak are the only ones who actually know what will be happening and that everyone else is just guessing.
The only thing about Mourinho though that doesn't sit right for me is that the Sheikh is clearly not one for publicity. Hughes seems like a Sheikh Mansour type of guy; under-stated, efficient and not a publicity seeker. Mourinho is not understated or publicity shy and I have a suspicion that the Sheikh may not be comfortable with that.

I see where you're coming from but I see it a bit differently. Even though the Sheik is publicity shy etc he still gets column inches due to the money aspect, who his advisors are dealing with, the big deals etc...if Mourinho was brought in, I would guess that the attention would shift to Mourinho and might not be a bad thing for someone who is shy of the limelight plus of course Mourinho can handle the press well.
Good point but I was alluding to the fact that these guys don't like being embarrassed even indirectly and Mourinho might put them in that position. They were quite sensitive to Sulaiman Al-Fahim's utterances and he's a powerful man in his own account.

imo Al-Fahim's utterances were rather more co-ordinated than you give credit for, it suited the Sheikh to have someone to "lay" off the blame on when in reality he is VERY close to the Sheikh and certainly wouldn't have been speaking out of turn......funnily enough as well that we went after kaka at xmas as Al-Fahim predicted.

As I see it JM is arguably one of the top 5 managers in the world but MH is inarguably not. I wouldn't know quite where to rank Hughes but certainly outside the top 20. Therefore the chances are JM would offer a real step-up in management and coaching and it would seem to be a step up that City can afford so they would have to be tempted if JM is.

I still dont know where we're at with this thread. Can anybody (ITK - ha see what i did there...) summarise it for me please. Cheers.

City might be interested in signing Mourinho, who might be interested in signing for City, who have some supporters who might be interested in City signing Mourinho, who might be the second coming if it weren't for zin zimmer.

I certainly think that his initial brief was to create a splash and he did that quite brilliantly. But I also think they didn't quite realise the backlash they would get from the media and have been playing it much more low key since then. In the recent incident in the Sun, they made it clear that Al-Fahim had no position in the club and effectively dissociated themselves from his remarks (which had been taken out of context anyway).

They initially made the same mistake that Thaksin made and assumed that the press would be respectful, as their local media are. Thaksin was a bright bloke but it took him some time to catch on that even his own senior employees were deliberately causing him problems in the media.

And ono, to answer your question, in summary no one knows what the f*** is going on.

interesting post, have not seen his full list of signings before.

in complete contradiction to your comment it actually reads better than i expected it too - Chelsea sold a few of those players at a healthy profit and a few have turned out to be excellent value for money.

can't really hold sheva against him either....

Ballack wasn't Mourinho's signing either.

Neither was Shevchenko, that deal was done over Mourinho's head and is what caused a rift between Roman and Jose

Don't forget they had already finished in 2nd place when Mourinho took over and had been in the top 4 since the mid-90's. So people complaining we've spent £100m and got nowhere need a reality check.

With all these 'dont forget x y and z weren't JM buys' I am not sure whather we agreed on the OP's point with listing the players JM 'bought' ... ? :-)
