Are City protestant, catholic or neither? Straw Poll

Whilst I don't think that someone's religion has much relevance today in who you support (at least I would hope not) I DO find stuff like this really interesting.

Anything to do with the origins of our Club is fascinating. Whether we were based, or not, on a collective group of like minded people is important. I think that was what DD was trying to establish.

Catholic by the way. From a family that also had Methodists, but the Catholic strain seemed to win through.

Traditionally we were protestant and the rags were the Catholics but we've had Jewish owners, now Muslim and all started in 1865 when Anna Connell established the St. Marks Church football team in West Gorton... I assume this was a CofE church...?

But whatever, it's all irrelevant now so be careful about stirring up a religious thread...

For the record I'm devoutly Man City!

This is how I remember it as a kid, sorry, but I'm not saying it was ever a real issue... Stop over-reacting! No need mate...

The rags were seen as the more predominantly Catholic club.

Whether we agree or disagree with the relevance of religion in football TODAY, that is pretty much how the Social history books see it.

ive never heard so much rubbish in all my life. accordingly to you, traditionally, i should be a united fan! city have never had any religeous affiliations, and the day it does, is the day i stop going. and if you think thats over reacting, i couldnt care less.

But nobody is saying anything of the sort warpig.

Just saying how it was perceived YEARS ago..

im basing my posts on the title of the thread and 1.6 stating that, traditionally, we have been a protestant club. if i am misunderstanding anything, then apologies to 1.6 and yourself mac. my point is this, since when have city been known as a protestant club?

It is clearly a really difficult area to discuss this. I always understood that traditionally city were more protestant and jewish and utd more catholic as i think they were founded by catholic priests in newton heath. Pls don't quote me i am not sure. i spoke to my uncle tonight who is 90 years old and he said that it was like that years ago as the clubs were mainly still linked to their traditional roots, he also said city have always had strong links with freemasonry. I am glad we all seem to have moved on a bit now hate sectarianism and fundamentalism in any form. Born C of E but city are my true religion
