Are telesales people..

I did it for a summer in Wythenshawe, a dodgy time share scam of some sorts.
I remember some woman reading me the riot act when I rang her and then I proceeded to ring her back accidently later that day and she went absolutely mental, funny looking back.
Just kids trying to get by for the most part, I just wanted so e summertime cash in between my arts degree for some ale money and to go and get mashed at ‘bugged out’ in Sankey's on a Friday.
Most people were polite and fine on the phone and the odd dirty old dear wouldn't mind you flirting away with her if you got into polite conversation at the end of your pitch.
That's because a lot of women are very, very filthy though and strangely, some like a Dublin accent!
Those were the days. Rode a 'bubbly' girl from that office too thinking back, marvellous.

Worse than the companies trying to flog you stuff, I've had two charities that we have direct debits set up with repeatedly phoning me just recently asking for more money.

A curt but polite "you have two choices, put the phone down now and continue to receive the donation or continue ringing me and I will cancel all donations to all charities" has so far stopped SCOPE and the National Deaf Children's Society.

Considering that it's common
The whole point of their calls is to fish for business.
Who wants to do business with someone who lies to you straight off the bat?
They ALWAYS say they have English sounding names when there is no way this could be true, one or two maybe, but certainly not all of them.

This is just ignorance in 100 words or less, isn't it?

dabz is a good guy, he hates being lied to and so do I, storm in a teacup :)
Thanks for that. Very kind of you, much appreciated.
At least some people pay attention.
Some people seem to react to things whenever race is mentioned without reading it through and understanding the point that was trying to be made.
Cheers mate.

I understand the point you were trying to make, however; how ascertaining that somebody cannot have an ‘English sounding name’ based off the accent you think that they have is, at best arrogant, at worst, bigoted.

I don’t take issue with it, and I’m certainly not throwing out the R word and it’s connotations/accusations – I just don’t think you realise i) how common Christian/Hebrew names are on the subcontinent, especially in places like Pondicherry, Goa and Mumbai, because of French, Portuguese and British colonial history in the area and ii) the reason why people do use a different name in a telesales job (and it’s something that isn’t restricted to ‘foreigner) – it’s not to lie or cheat to you – it’s simply because Andy is much easier to understand over a phone line than Aditya – imagine trying to explain and pronunciate your first name a hundred times a day – it soon wears thin; and I’m talking from experience.

On top of this, and as per the example given in the thread – you’d be amazed at how many individuals you’re writing off as using a first name that couldn’t possibly be their own because of where you think that they’re from – and you’re several thousand miles out on that assumption.

As I said - I wasn't calling your character into question - I just think you're making some assumptions that are very wide of the mark.

I can see why someone would try to use an easy to recognise/pronounce name, but nowadays people like me who live in big northern cities are well used to asian etc names - they should trust us a bit more if they have changed their monikers :)

It's more spending 2 minutes of every call trying to get the other person to understand what you're saying - I used to work with a girl called Sophie that eventually just decided to go with Stacey as she couldn't be arsed correcting everybody she spoke to on the phone.

"I wasn't calling your character into question"
Using such strong words like arrogant, ignorant, and bigoted suggests otherwise mate.
Thanks for the history lesson, although I already knew it.
It was just a throwaway remark about annoying telesales people.
I certainly didn't expect the Spanish inquisition....actually, this is Bluemoon after all, maybe I did.

Every week I'm getting phone calls telling me I've either been involved in an accident or been sold PPI which I shouldn't have been. I'm pleasant with every one of them as I acknowledge they're just doing their job however I'm unsure how many times I can say "sorry, you've got it wrong, could you remove my number from your database please? Thanks, have a good day". They're clearly not removing my number, c**ts.

Had one girl who sounded fit though, if she phones back I'm just going to wank over the phone to her, might stop the phone calls.
This is always more interesting if you use Skype.
