Have been genuinely impressed with Messi this World Cup. Obviously he is not the same player he was, but he adapted really well to his current flaws and his world class quality is still very much evident in his play. Just the way he shields the ball and most times manage to squeeze a pass/dribble out of it is something magical.

Forget the walking around bit for a second and focus on his ability on the ball. If it was any other player in his 20s doing the things he did, we'd probably be lauding them by now.

Personally couldn't give a crap who is the best player of all time, but Messi is a brilliant watch and certainly one of the finest ever to grace this sport.

And last night he was brilliant on a handful of occasions and that was what was needed.

He's been over-praised by commentators for not much (the commentary has frequently been appalling this tournament), but he does things that others can't a few times every match. And opponents who know all about him can't stop him doing it, even though he doesn't run that much any more!

It looked to me that the widely splayed leg was what did for the keeper, as that was movement to obstruct, and not just standing still.
We've seen defenders penalised for years for being run into and doing less.

It's a great shame that McCoist is an ITV man, as his evident joy in the game itself shines.

It looked to me that the widely splayed leg was what did for the keeper, as that was movement to obstruct, and not just standing still.
We've seen defenders penalised for years for being run into and doing less.

It's a great shame that McCoist is an ITV man, as his evident joy in the game itself shines.

To me McCoist is one of the few comentators worth listening to,
Anyone who watched that incident & thought it wasnt a penalty is either being awkward & trying to be "different" or just really doesnt understand football.

An excellent performance from Argentina. They nullified Croatia really well and Messi just scanned the pitch and took 30 minutes to assess where the space was and how to punish them and then he did. The third goal was just exceptional, he can keep playing for years years because he's the best at just about everything. You could stick him in the middle of the park and he'd just tick things over and create moment of magic. Wonderful to see him still performing on the biggest stage. Just gutting that England will not be there to meet him and destroy his dream ;)
