nij, I know this is probably teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, (for which I apologise in advance), but it was photocopies of the shipping manifest etc. wasn't it? In a corrupt country who knows what could happen to evidence.

No mate it was electronic copies sent by the shipping company with container seal numbers - we also provided the import tax list from SL which proves we imported it there

both these groups ie the gov and the prisoners abroad are used to providing help and guidance might be worth a punt in contacting them
if the guy is not a UK citizen suggest contacting his own consular office over there
