Arsenal (A) - Post-Match Thread

For the Arsenal incident, it was reviewed by VAR and as stated by Peter Walton “we looked at it several times from many different angles and were unable to determine with certainty if there was a foul by Ederson.” In these circumstances they can’t give a penalty. For the City incident the referee either didn’t see it or did see it and thought it wasn’t a foul. The VAR review suggested he might have missed something. He looked at it again and overturned his original ruling.

Both decisions were correct and this is how VAR is supposed to work.

Instead of booing Bernardo the Arsenal fans would do better to boo Xhaka whose bad decisions have hurt them so many times.

The issue with VAR is before it was brought in every mistake was assumed to have been fixed if it was introduced. What has happened is that there is now just another layer of possible mistakes. Having watched the Arsenal VAR penalty, its really hard to say, looked to me like he got the ball, but he might not have, I don't know and isn't that the point if its not clear... The City penalty was pretty much as clear cut as it can get.... Bottom line City didn't break VAR it was already broken and I'm not even sure this was a good example of why it sucks..
The first one you could watch 100 times and still not be sure. With admittedly blue tinted specs on Ederson's heel touches the ball first and his foot is planted on the ground, but if it was anywhere else on the pitch you'd see it as a 50/50 with the decision going either way. The second one the VAR says "and did you see the handful of the shirt" and the ref has said "no" so he has been asked to take a look at it paying attention to the thing he missed first time around. It doesn't seem overly complicated to me, but VAR hasn't solved any controversies and seems to have created some so maybe we should just get rid of it and go back to where we were.

xhaka is a **** .

If I understand Arsenal's attitude correctly they object to the ref's being asked to review our penalty but not theirs. They believe that theirs was a clear penalty but that ours was not a penalty at all. If I am correct the referee did not award Arsenal a penalty because his opinion was that Ederson got a touch on the ball which then went out of play before Oldegard went down. Those responsible for VAR examined the incident and decided that Eddie had touched the ball before Oldegard and they confirmed the ref's decision. I don't see it as VAR's job to ask the ref to re-examine decisions on which ref and VAR are in complete agreement. "Their" penalty was not a penalty. In the case of our penalty the ref was adamant - it was NOT a penalty but VAR "took a look" and decide that the referee had missed something which would have changed his decisiopn and asked him to take another look. This he did and changed his decision. Arsenal fans don't like it but surely the system worked in the way it was meant to. Xhaka's knee certainly interrupted Bernardo's forward movement and Bernado's shirt came far enough away from his body in Xhaka's hand to suggest that Bernardo hit the deck with decisive assistance. I/we don't agree with VAR all the time but today I think it performed the role for which it was introduced.
I said as much around page 70. Spot on

The Arse were well up for it today and seem to have a lot of friends in the media as one of the original SKY4. The orchestrated faux outrage won't matter a fuck as the 3 points are coming back up the M6. We win pretty or we win ugly? We just win. 100% respect to the travelling Blues - scenes when Rodders poked in the winner...!

total hatchet job from sky ion their review of the penalty incidents... According to them we've again had the benefit of the VAR officials getting it wrong.

Is it me or is VAR now being blamed for City winning, there's nothing to blame, no one else to blame so its now VAR, I mean bad VAR calls across the league and across the seasons, but it affects the title race and its now a thing!

My god they're all in a lot of pain, and they're going to have this for 4 or 5 months now hahaHAHA

(Hopefully)
City are now to blame for everything that goes on in football as we now have all those old cartel club fans crying into their club duvets and praying to their pin-up idols on the wall.

’It‘s just not fair!’

Quoting journos as well, the ones that said it was crystal clear that are should have had a pen! They hate us going clear at the top which is just fantastic.
Thing is, if they give a pen, 1, Eddy might save it, 2, taker may miss, 3, they score. Not important. It before their goal so still only 1 down. I know it affects the rest of the game but not like it could put them 2-0 up
