Arsenal Thread 2015/16

I have a bit of a different perspective on Wenger, who in my judgement, has just as much autocratic control as he of the purple noggin, or is just so like-minded and lockstep with the board it doesn't matter.

Here's a quote of his from today:

"When you have to invest, when you find the players to invest the money in, the problem at the moment is to find the players that guarantee that you are absolutely a better team after."

The problem is there AREN'T any guarantees. Transfers are about taking risks to make your club demonstrably better. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Welcome to Earth, Arsene.

This isn't him parroting the Board -- this is just him. This quote underscores what I think is reality: he is simply a very, very risk-averse guy. That's totally fine. He can run his club his way. It's also fine since his relative risk-aversity means he is less willing to be ambitious to challenge us.

But . . . being like this also means that (a) you don't complain when your fans complain that you aren't ambitious enough, and (b) you don't criticize other clubs who are willing to take on more risk than you for the potential of a greater reward -- in both a financial and a sporting sense.

My problem with Arsene is that he does (a) and (b) regularly.

Which is why he's a ****.

Have to say that I agree with some of what you've said there. There may well have been an element of risk-aversity that has crept into his character down the years. However, where I don't think it's ultimately down to him (how much Arsenal spend) is because of his track record as Arsenal manager prior to their move to the Emirates and, even more so, when he was manager of Monaco. Back then he didn't have any issues with either club spending big sums of money on players. At Monaco in particular, they were bankrolled by the monarchy so unless he's suddenly decided to take on a moralistic view about heavy spending in the meantime I'm more inclined to believe that it's the board that are calling the shots and he's reasonably happy to go along with it while making excuses not too dissimilar to those that Ferguson made under the Glazer's ownership when United weren't spending big.

Arsenal releasing the news that Welbeck will be out until Christmas the day after transfer window just sums them up.

Arsenal definitely need a striker, even moreso with Welbeck's injury. Wenger's stubbornness will cost them, Wenger will never win the Premier League again IMO.

In the summer of 2014, Mourinho addressed his team's weaknesses with top quality and won the league. In the summer of 2015, Pellegrini addressed our weaknesses with top quality and we're favourites to win the league. Arsenal fans must wonder why Wenger isn't able to do that.
