It'll play out according to the issue of the Irish border and even Brussels doesn't want to fuck with that hornets nest.
It probably will but whatever soft border agreement is made for Ireland and Gibraltar will make it harder to justify not allowing other parts of the UK to also have softer borders. The whole thing is a can of worms with stuff like Gibraltar popping up when we didnt think of them, at least I hadnt thought about Gibraltar before.

Spain is to be given a veto over the future of Gibraltar
The EU's initial draft negotiating guidelines said any brexit agreement should not apply to Gibraltar without "agreement between the kingdom of Spain and the UK"
I can't get my head around this, if Gibraltar is British what's it got to do with Madrid? The Spanish have been told repeatedly by the Gibraltarians that they want nothing to do with Spain

It will be interesting how this plays out.

I can imagine May writing a little one liner to EU....re: Gibraltar....fucking try it cnuts!

Love to see them try it as well, if Franco didn't have the cahunahs to have a go i can't see this generation of Spaniards going for it

Fine.

What do you think underpins the strength of a currency?

The economic activity and assets that country possesses. If you were to deduct the natural and other economic assets we have from that base are you seriously telling me it wouldn't fall?

That the uk access to oil would have no impact.

If you are then there really is no talking to you,

The £ fell 20% due to Brexit, it us expected to fall further when the deals we are hoping for either don't materialise at all or take much longer.

Now on top if that you withdraw a £190b economy from that equation and you think nothing will happen?

Fair enough.

Well to begin with there's an argument that the falling pound will benefit us but that's another argument.

Any minor political change fluctuates the rate so yes the uncertainty would make it drop initially but the long term is guess work. The Bank of England continuously get predictions wrong.

You're very mistaken in thinking this inital drop since Brexit is going to be a continued, steady drop, it will rise again and the same would maybe happen if Scotland voted yes.

However they will never even get to that point so it's a redundant debate.

Like with Northern Ireland and Ireland I am guessing the EU don't want a hard border happening, but like you say, what has it got to do with Madrid.

If the EU think we won't put up a fight for a small piece of territorial land then they have forgot about the Falklands war.

It's quite amazing the amount of stick May got for hinting she was to use EU nationals as a bargaining chip yet I have heard nothing from the remainers regarding the EU's threat at hinting towards Britain giving Spain Gibraltar back. This is despite Gibraltar wanting to remain British even after voting over 90% I think in favour of remaining in the EU.

I think our top position as top soft power in the world will help. A few chats over some fine meals will calm Spain down should they feel cheeky. All it would take is a few words to a few reporters in Spanish papers saying May will let Scotland choose their own way sooner rather than later and all hell would break loose. The Spanish do not want sections rising up against them for independence, it is the absolute last thing they need. With their unemployment issues they have their hands very full, i feel the Spanish people would go apeshit tbh if they saw their gov pissing around with stuff just to wind us up a bit when they have severe economic issues, very severe.

I should note, the headlines would be bullshit but the effect will be achieved easily. The Spanish government are in no position to play funny buggers atm basically, they have more pressing issues at hand.

Agree.

Am I correct in saying that Britain in Spain's biggest export location as well?

Why the EU want to turn this into a possible territorial war as well as a trade war just goes to show the true colours running through that awful institution.

I think if they carry on as they are more remainers will turn to leavers.

I doubt that very much.

The SNP seizes the moment, Irish Republicans have a spring in their step, Spain sees an opportunity....Drip, drip, drip.

The minute Scotland leave the UK and apply to be a member of the EU utter panic will resonate in Spain over fears Catalonia will have the chance and demand to do the same.

I wonder whether some in Ireland really want the financial burden that Northern Ireland could/ will bring.

You could be right boss although i am not sure. What i do know is they have towns and some cities that depend on our ex pats, we do not compliment it nicely, they rely on us and if we were forced to leave due to hassle between the two countries it would literally kill these towns. I do think the general tone of our points being Spain is heavily dependent on us and will be for the foreseeable future is correct. I am not talking Madrid or a major city here but some very large towns with huge areas of dense housing that you get in suburbs here for example, not a few farmhouses, large towns with a hell of a lot of ex pats/uk immigrants.

Scotland is our problem, Spain sees an opportunity these two situation are not mutually exclusive, Spain will use our stupidity against us with Gibraltar. As for the Republic, the south would have the north in a heartbeat, unification of Ireland is the stuff of national destiny.

SNP have recently lost a referendum, Irish Republicans are still in a minority in the North, 99.9% of Gibraltarians want to remain British despite the recent referendum, just cannot understand where Spain and the EU are coming from on this

Can you imagine the furore if the UK govt said it demanded as part of the exit negotiations the right to decide if Catalonia were to remain as a part of Spain?

I truly hope our govt proves it has a backbone. I suspect they will do by the way.

The EU is like any other bully. They're cowards.

Watched Alex Polizzi series on Spain tonight, she toured the Basque country and then Catalonia, there was not one Spanish flag in sight, the Spaniards need to be careful what they wish for
