Assisted dying

My heart sank when the result of that vote was announced last night. Gutted it didn't pass. As someone who's recently watched a loved one suffer for months prior to passing, I was hoping this would get through so that other family's, particularly the individual, may not have to go through the same pain.

Too many MSP's bottled it. Or, others who agreed on principle but wanted additional safeguarding, which was implemented into the bill, only for them to vote against it anyway. Can't helpt but think religious views also played it's part too.

A sad day for terminally ill people.

I’m disappointed in the Scottish result on assisted dying, disappointed for the patients who will suffer even more months of misery and pain, struggling every minute of every day.

The health service is broken it can’t cure them or even provide relief because medication is rationed doctors are scarce and so are the carers that look after long/short term patients. None of the politicians voting will have need for assisted dying. They all have private health insurance and the very best hospitals and carehomes.

Failed to become law.

This on a day a story has come out on a lady who lost her only son and chose to go to Switzerland to end her life.

People in this country should have the right to end their life in a dignified way, should they want to.

I didn't know she was British. Interesting. Certainly interesting for someone like me suffering long term severe depression with no hope of escape.

I’ll be taking a shit load of pills should I get that bad, my aunty has severe dementia it’s awful, although physically fit her mind is complete jelly, if I’m down that road I’m off as well, her family are exhausted with it, I won’t put mine through that, we should be allowed in the 21st century to decide our own fate.

No worries I believe there is still time for the bill to pass bringing it back unaltered in the next session of parliament maybe before the summer ends

“MPs and peers who led the assisted dying bill have promised to bring it back to parliament after it ran out of time in the House of Lords.

Kim Leadbeater, the Labour MP who tabled the private member’s bill, said the plan would be to table an identical bill in the next parliamentary session, which would prevent peers blocking it again, as the Lords cannot stop the same bill twice”

We've had it in operation for a few years now without any serious issues.

I think it's a good idea for those with a terminal illness so they can be the ones to decide if enough is enough. Quite civilised really.

In 2021 the criteria were expanded and I'm not comfortable with that.

Jim puts it so eloquently......

A gentleman in my local took his own life after a dementia diagnosis. He was a really sound bloke. Ran his own business for years and had properties. He made his decision and put everything he owned to his kids, then took his own life.

So near 75% of the public support Assisted Dying. The bill was past by our elected officials to become law.

Yet the unelected fuckers have stalled and sabotaged it.

Unbelievable.

I think it's important to separate the House of Lords as a whole from the 'blockers' in this matter. It seems that the vast majority of amendments that stalled it came from about 7 people.

I don’t want to like the post because it’s bloody awful it has come to this but I totally get it.

Wouldn't it have been so much nicer for him to be lying on a bed, his favourite music playing and receiving a gentle needle like he would have if he was going in for surgery. Then simply slipping away like many of us have experienced, only he wouldn't wake up.

.........but no, he has to go through the process of doing it himself, hoping it works, depending on how he did it, probably more suffering, or he is left to slowly deteriorate and suffer until his body finally gives up on him.

If he was a dog, welfare charges would be laid and the media and certainly social media would be eagerly splashing photographs of emaciated animals, unable to eat or walk and be calling out for prison sentences for disgusting treatment of animals.

Yet for a person it is totally acceptable, it just doesn't make sense.

The problem is mate its really difficult killing yourself relatively pain free without fucking it up and also having a loved one finding you is not good. Its also something you have to do all alone.
This shows that our politicians are not fit for purpose. Useless twats most of them.
