BastardsI think it's important to separate the House of Lords as a whole from the 'blockers' in this matter. It seems that the vast majority of amendments that stalled it came from about 7 people.

Sorry to hear about your aunty, been through similar with a relative and it’s horrific. One of my best mates has just lost his mum to Alzheimers too aged 60, she’d suffered a stroke that brought it on, it’s horrible and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.I’ll be taking a shit load of pills should I get that bad, my aunty has severe dementia it’s awful, although physically fit her mind is complete jelly, if I’m down that road I’m off as well, her family are exhausted with it, I won’t put mine through that, we should be allowed in the 21st century to decide our own fate.
This is a good argument for it. People often have to do it in gruesome circumstances, often making other people who find them or run them over, the victims too.The problem is mate its really difficult killing yourself relatively pain free without fucking it up and also having a loved one finding you is not good. Its also something you have to do all alone.
This shows that our politicians are not fit for purpose. Useless twats most of them.
Its done in lots of countries around the world, around 300 million have access to it. It cant be beyond the ability of Brits to do a bit of research and copy the way other countries do it. Fucking useless in this country. This is a good argument for it. People often have to do it in gruesome circumstances, often making other people who find them or run them over, the victims too.
I’m genuinely on the fence about it, I am for it I think, if the legislation is water tight.
My point would be if I was diagnosed with it and could feel myself going it would be my choice, it doesn’t happen instantly but if they said yep your mind will be jelly soon then I’d make that decision.Sorry to hear about your aunty, been through similar with a relative and it’s horrific. I want to ask you how it’d work in that scenario though? Surely the decision maker is the person who wishes to die and dementia sufferers aren’t in a fit state, a lot of the time, to make that decision. Obviously the family can’t just choose to end their life.
You could say that someone could sign off on assisted dying, should they make it to that state later life, when they were fit and healthier earlier in life, but what if the dementia sufferer then doesn’t understand and is relatively at peace but is a different person?
I think it’s a moral minefield. There’s definitely a strong argument for assisted dying, I just feel a bit uneasy about the whole thing.
Got you. I would say that makes a lot of sense, the difficulty might be confirmation you’re of sound mind still when you make that decision, just playing devils advocate, and whether or not they can be confident on how bad it will become. But that’s something for a case by case basis and the professionals to decide upon.My point would be if I was diagnosed with it and could feel myself going it would be my choice, it doesn’t happen instantly but if they said yep your mind will be jelly soon then I’d make that decision.

This is what they have in Canada for this situation.Sorry to hear about your aunty, been through similar with a relative and it’s horrific. One of my best mates has just lost his mum to Alzheimers too aged 60, she’d suffered a stroke that brought it on, it’s horrible and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

My father died of lung cancer that spread through out his organs.About time this happened , having witnessed thousands of deaths i can say that some go in horrific pain and suffering , drs used to give enough morphine to keep patients sedated and it ultimately surpressed their breathing so much they die peacefully but over time that has changed and drs are not doing that , i assume because of the odd person who would look to sue them
I agree a free vote but also it needs the country to have a vote, it is that important a decision . I think every poll shows people are in favour and have been for years but the mps are shit scared to vote for it so bypass them or do both votes
If every health trust had a panel who come together to discuss individual patients , made up of drs , legal people and pallative care along with that patients gp then i can see how the checks can be made to avoid pressure and coersion on the patient involved , that is key
I read this PinkFinal and was going to post it.What is a 'safe death'? Mentally ill woman asks for assisted dying in Canada

Canada has twice delayed access to medically assisted dying for those with mental illness. Claire Brosseau says she cannot wait any longer and wants the courts to decide.www.bbc.co.uk

I think she means a doctor supervised end, compared to a wish and a prayer with a gun, rope, pills etc.
I fully support assisted dying, but I draw the line at using it for mental health issues.
Will there be?The problem with allowing the government to pass a bill bringing this into law is that there will be many instances where the efficient cost effective removal of burdens on society will be helped by advocating health care professionals who will take the coin to tick the right box, anyone who has had or has seen someone go through a PIP assessment will know just how cruel medical professionals can be when they have the authority.
Maybe people can have timers embedded into their skulls that make their eyes flash when they reach a certain age?

Anyone who's seen a loved one slowly die from a terminal illness will know just how cruel this practice is.
Everything is rationed now including medication and the Tories want to do away with fit notes, it’s nothing like the health service we once had.Pip assessment is not done by a doctor.

Ok.I didn't say that PIP assessments are done by a doctor, most people have seen a loved one die of a terminal illness it doesn't mean everyone has the same opinion.
Ok.
Pip assessment is not done by a 'health care professional'
I don't think everyone has the same opinion. Some people seem happy to spend the last 6 months of their life getting iller until they die in pain and a puddle of their own piss.
Me, I'd like the ability to avoid this
Ha. I take it you missed the shitshow in the UK regarding the assisted dying bill?Let democracy have its way with this, I still don't trust the government or government employees to be involved in decisions like this. Some of the horror stories from Canada centre around people killing themselves because of poverty.
I can't see us doing that in this country because it isn't flying.
