Aston Villa (A) | PL | Post Match Thread

Outplayed by a Villa team that is in a rich vein of form and they will give the Goons a game at the weekend , just one too many injuries and suspensions for us ,and at the end of the day we lose to another deflected goal. This result only confirms that our squad is paper thin and we are carrying players like Phillips and Nunes £100m wasted.
If we can get our strongest team on the pitch then it will be game on in 2024 , but we are just going to concentrate on keeping in touching distance of the leaders until then , we have a nice run of games coming up and even with a depleted squad quite sure we will be within a few points by the new year.
Impressed with Villa but i dont see them challenging , they f*ck up at Bournemouth and then play their game of the season against us , bu tthey will take points of our challengers

Won’t go down well here either but again another game where haaland is basically a passenger. For supposedly the best striker in world football I expect more from him. There is more to being a striker than just scoring.

If mahrez played with that effort he would be slaughtered
He did nothing wrong.

What exactly do you expect from him when his teammates forget how to play football?

By far the worst performance under Peps tenure with us.

Paying the price now for letting a plethora of world class players leave (Laporte, Cancelo, Gundo, Zin, Jesus, Sterling to name a few) and bringing in sub standard replacements.

Reap what you sow.
Arrogance, tiny squad, poor recruitment, selling more than decent players for net spend glory

No point talking about individuals in the players threads, as this is the place to discuss tonight, but jeez we need to pick tonight apart…

Start with Alvarez, really?

Even though Haaland missed a couple of defent chances and Villa's goal was a deflection, they were by far the better team and fully deserved to win.

We didn't look remotely like scoring a late equalizer, did we even create a single chance in the second half? Compare that to Arsenal and Liverpool who always look like scoring late goals.

I'm not that surprised we got outplayed when our midfield consisted of a central defender coming back from a long absence, a right-back who may or may not go on to be a good player and a striker. That's a massive drop off from the midfield that lead us to the treble (Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne) and it inevitably showed.

I think we also have to give credit to Villa. They have a top manager and have recruited very well. As Pep often says when he's criticised for not winning every single game, "the other teams are good too."

Don't really think that can be said for a side sitting above us in the table.

They outplayed us tonight. They have been good in other games too though.
Great manager. Look at his record. Always produces good teams. Just not at the Arse Villa just played to their usual home form..we look.like a club at the end of a cycle tbf.. ill still cheer him on..best ten years plus ever as a blue..well done lads its got to end sometime

What the fucks happened to our midfield? Just shows how reliant we are on Rodders and Kev. And do we never look like we can get back in it when we go a goal behind these days ? The hearts been ripped out and far too many players are not at it. Maybe it's all the games of these last 4 or 5 years catching up or maybe even the hungers gone. Whatever it is, somethings not right. It's up to Pep to sort it..and quick! And Alvarez really needs a few games out, the kid needs a break.

Need to sort out the 8 & 10 roles as we are too weak in midfiled and short of goals when haaland isn/ fed.

kovacic and nunes are not showing any promise yet and alvarez/lewis get pushed off the ball too easily at times.

the subs made us worse but at least he used some for once
Nunes not inspiring and fuck knows what Pep saw in him!

We’re a one man team and awful without Rodri. I can’t believe Philips would have been any worse than that today. We let Villa overrun us and they won every dual. They were lucky with the goal but not the win. Two decent efforts on goal and none in second half. Shocking.

Lightweight. It was like men against boys. Didn't make it difficult for them whatsoever.
That midfield was awful no physical presence bar stones. We look rudderless at present. Not being funny but I’m a little embarrassed by how Phillips is being treated absolutely no way he’d have done worse than Rico Nunes or Kovacic alongside Stones tonight. It’s actually humiliating for the lad to be sitting there seeing us struggle in midfield and to not even get minutes in a game like that
