Atalanta CL (H) Post Match Thread

There was something really strange last night that i personally don't remember seeing before, but i might just not be aware of it happening. Rodri was pushing up high alongside Gundogan creating a double pivot when we had the ball, leaving Fernandinho on his own as the fullbacks were also pushing up high. When we turned over the ball, they had the easy outlet down our right hand side (or down the left, because Fern would have to scoot a bit right to cover the otherside too) and it caused all kinds of problems. I believe that 20mins or so into the game, Pep made the adjustment as Rodri was no longer doing this and we gained control. But Stones also did this when he came on, so i'm not sure if it's always been happening or something new that was asked for this specific game?

Enjoyed the performances of Sterling and Foden.

It is also good to see Ederson seems to have regained the eye of the tiger in recent weeks?

The rest of the performance was pretty concerning, a real lack of cohesion and more a tale of talent winning out, rather than people doing their jobs properly.

Regardless of his injury, Mendy makes so many poor unintelligent passes, he also threw the ball to the opposition three times last night.

We need a new left-back and, much as a enjoy Walker's intensity, he is an injury or red card waiting to happen.

As for Stones, he's in danger of letting it all slip away. A massive fan but he's not even alert to give and go's, passing twice across his backline and not putting enough on the ball, almost putting someone in the shit.

5-1, all very welcome, but Atalanta are shit, no talking up of them even from Pep will convince me otherwise.

If that's a first-legged tie against anyone half decent, we are out before half-time.

The best period of the game was early in the 2nd half where Atalanta were desperately trying to squeeze the game and their defenders were pushed right up. It was suicidal but what else could they do. If you can create a little time and space on the ball for yourself, as Foden, De Bruyne and Gundogan could, then it was an easy job to slide Sterling through. Unfortunately few teams will play like that against City. It's what happens in a Cup tie when you are losing and you are chasing the game.

In league games most losing clubs decide not to attack, and accept losing but wish to conserve goal difference so they just carry on defending their penalty area. Obviously no point in preserving goal difference in a Cup game and you have to gamble.

I think maybe when you see how badly other teams do when committed to attack then you might give our defenders and midfielders a little more credit. Playing Guardiola style, defenders inevitably get caught one on one at times but you need midfield play that is so good that you rarely let it happen.

Even now when Ederson and co play the ball around the back it makes me very nervous that we are going to lose it and present our opponent with a chance, but we rarely do.

Mendy is becoming a real concern for me.
Where have those rampaging runs gone?
His crossing is poor, his use of the ball much worse than Zinchenko and as for his defending that’s pretty inexistent.
He is miles away from where he was pre-injury.
It may all just be lack of confidence and ring rustiness and I can see Pep is giving him game time to try and improve things. However it seems to me there is little sign of progress so far. I hope to God I am wrong and the old Mendy reappears soon as we can Ill afford persistent displays such as the one last night.

I am sure the plaudits go to Raz and who can argue. but what worried me was had we were playing at Anfield we would have been four down after half an hour We were so open through the middle and at the back its frightening

Not sure how you can equate a game at home to Atlanta is relevant to an away game at Anfield. Last 2 games against the Klan Pep has got his tactics spot on and he will surely adapt to suit the opponent.

I share your concern. Match fitness is obviously one thing, but he has previously shown a lack of intelligence, certainly not on Zinchenko's level, when it comes to joining up inside with the midfield.

He can't be half as effective when you have Raheem occupying the space higher up, so he stops the momentum by checking and making a pass right on to top of his team-mate.

If he does try to go beyond Sterling on the overlap, he's unable to get back quickly enough if he loses it.

There were games last year against Wolves and Spurs where you have to watch him behind your fingers.

Then there are games at Liverpool last season where we played much closer to out own goal, where you thought he was more suited to sitting deeper.

Mate you've turned into a real prophet of doom recently. Agree on Mendy though, his pass completion rate must be the lowest of any player in the squad and don't get me started on his positional sense.
