Athletics Thread

Put it on for the first time in years yesterday (It was on before the ladies rugby) and watched the 800 metres. Then the medal table was shown, we've slumped a bit over the years haven't we?
Takes years of investment into coaching and sports science to push innovative techniques and ideas, plus investment to ensure participation is year-round and high in number to target potential within a larger pool over a long period of time to see results in athletics.

That’s why we did so well at the 2012 Olympics, we started preparing for and investing in it as soon as the Athens games ended in 2004. There’s £8m less going into GBR athletics now than for the 2012 cycle. And think about how much £8m is taking inflation into account since then.

Compared to other counties our school system and sports facilities at schools are very poor. We literally just add athletics and ‘Sports Day’ at the end of the Summer term each year and hardly anyone will train all year for it, compared to how thorough other countries are with it and how much investment they put in.

Even when I was at school and that was forever ago all we did for sports was fuck about on a football field choosing your own sides and "Getting on with it", I blame MacDonalds and Pizza express ;)

AI might have the answer though, a little better thought out than my offering.

While there are exceptions, a disproportionate number of elite athletes come from middle-class backgrounds due to the high cost of training, specialized equipment, and access to quality coaching, which are more readily available to wealthier families. However, this doesn't mean athletic success is exclusively a middle-class phenomenon, as individuals from various backgrounds, including working-class and impoverished environments, have overcome significant barriers to achieve elite status.

3rd leg cost us a medal in the 4x1. Poor changeovers on both handovers and a slow leg.

Dina and Amy had us up on the US after 2 legs.

Large amounts of money and focus have been put into the relay squads in the last few years but that has produced zilch at these games. If you cannot get the basics of passing a baton at the right time correct no amount of money is going to sort that out.

Relays are just a bit of exhibitive fun at the end of games. The serious stuff is the individual competitions.

That's why we focus on relays because we have so few individual medal contenders

Pretty poor showing from the Brit’s overall but some unbelievable competition aside from that.

Still think the men’s marathon end was probably the best moment, maybe the triple jump end as well and the French Jimmy winning the 10k.

I think in an ideal world Keely would have paced it fast but with less surges. Moraa surged at 200m, 400m and 500m, she had nothing left at the end.

I think Keely being injured for 3-4months obviously didnt help.
I thought Keely looked unwell. She was very flushed even before the race. After all her problems in the last year, she did well to get a medal.

I've just read that Femke Bol is running the 800m next season. I wasn't expecting that. It's going to be very interesting watching her, she will obviously be the quickest over 400m by a long way but can she adjust to the distance and the tactics now she's not running in a lane on her own?

Could be some great races next summer with hodgkinson v Bol.

What about the hurdles?
Is she packing that in too?
