Atletico (A) - Post-Match Thread

Spanish newspapers and media have AM as heroes. City were despicable in their time wasting and (god forbid) bringing on a defensive midfielder in the 2nd half.... That was Marca.

I have a feeling that Spain is angry at the demise of Spanish football. City are the obvious targets.

BTW I loved ferny telling foden to lie back down on the pitch. Don't know if anyone else saw that in the melee?

A way to win. Jesus Christ.,this is the champions league. They are the Spanish champions and have a forward who they spunked 114 million on. It’s not an fa cup tie where a non league team is playing a prem team. How an ex pro can enjoy seeing Felipe and savic purposely go out to injure a fellow pro is beyond me.

am I being a touch over sensitive today. I don’t know. If posters think I am then please give me a nudge but I just can’t conform to the way of thinking that last night was somehow enjoyable or something that just happens in football.
I didn't think what he said was that bad but he's still a busy ****.

I don't blame Atletico that much. We knew they were like this, but the main problem was the ref let everything go and so it all escalated throughout the match.

After Felipe getting away with that assault in Foden, there was a shove by Savic on him completely off the ball in the first half that the ref should have pulled him up for and had a word about at the very least (should have been a yellow imo), but nothing. And so it continued.

This was all on the ref letting that bunch of dickheads do what they want.

We did well to stay calm, though we did stop playing a bit. I think a few of the midfield/forward options stopped wanting the ball as much as usual (possibly tiredness) and we were forced to either play risky short balls or lose it long. Brilliant to see them off in the end, though we did need that save from Ederson right at the end.
Agree 100% about the ref but the main blame surely has to be the team that comes up with this sort of foul play and thuggery in the first place ? Both the ref and Atletico have a lot to answer for, and let's not forget the VAR official who seemed to have gone missing at crucial moments.

Times have indeed changed, and for the better. City have an investment on that field of play into the 100s of millions. The last thing they, and hopefully us fans too, want to see is Stefan Savage and Co. kicking their investment in the head, leg, back, and not be punished for it.
Too many of the older generation mistake aggression for passion, and brutality for competitiveness.
What athletico did last night was mask their inability to fully compete with aggressive behaviour.

Whilst I agree with some of this, the only really dangerous challenge for me was the initial one on Foden.

The rest of it was all hand bags mainly and people are getting carried away.

The boys on the pitch would have loved it.

I didn't have a lot of issues with it all, aside from the initial challenge and I really liked seeing the players rally together and stick up for team mates.

Not every match can be a free flowing festival of football.

Just got up after getting in at 4:30 this morning. Enough has been said regarding their antics, some of which were a total disgrace, however.

What a game, what an atmosphere to have been involved in. A real boys being turned into men kind of situation. Really quite proud that despite being on the ropes a lot in that 2nd half, we managed to get the job done. It could have been a lot easier, thought John Stones header early in 1st half was a real chance, we hit the post and Gundo had a really good chance late in the game too.

Referee is as much to blame as anyone for how it boiled over. Allowing the Felipe challenge on Foden eary in the game set the tone for how far Atlético could push the boundaries in my opinion.

What a tough little fucker Foden is too. I've been saying to my wife for ages that he's going to blow his top soon enough with some of the treatment he gets and how he didn't completely blow his top last night I'll never know.

I imagine if his mum was on the touchline they'd have been a fire extinguisher or two being swung about.

Anyway, to conclude. One of the best European games I've been to, a proper European atmosphere and a good result.

Utter bastards savic and felipe and yellow jurgens teeth!

Always had a soft spot for atletico previously but their colours are well and truly nailed to the mast. Dirty fucking thugs.

Our football never really got going last night and arguably in the first leg too. My goodness though we came through a real cauldron of hate. Their fans would always be up for this one but diego shitstain's cynicism was off the scale. Add that to an utter invertebrate with the whistle and we were always going to be up against it.

Laporte and Stones were magnificent, Kyle stayed strong, hope he recovers quickly. Eddie had a big game as did Kev and Phil. They way those animals targeted him was sickening. He stood up to it though, showed his class against the cunts.

Ake was imperious when he came on, much needed steel against constant attacks, many outside the lotg. Dinho led by example got the twats deserved bookings. Zinch after everything that's happened, and probably not close to consideration, immediately came to the defence of Phil when he dragged by his neck by that scruffy turd. Kudos also to Jack for pointing out that he was a ****.

Bruising encounter with injuries going into Saturday. Backs against the wall time. Again.

Special word for bt's reach around for them. Pathetic bitter morons.

No argument needed mate, it's all about opinions.

I'm nearly 30 years older than you, and no doubt have memories of teams, at all levels, that would make Atletico look like pussycats. Mike Summerbee and Co would have loved playing against them.

The European has changed. Not necessarily for the better in my opinion. It's too 'safe' and predictable nowadays in terms of 'protecting' the tournament's big name clubs.

Like I say, it's all about opinions. I enjoyed it, you didn't. The one thing that we must agree on is that it's great to see City in the semi finals!

Cheers!
Yes mate I’m buzzing that we are in the semis. I was made up with that performance last night. It showed a side to us that most people don’t associate with us or realise we have in us and bodes well for the future. We showed we had some minerals last night when it would have been easy to wilt.

Look at foden. Got absolutely mothered by some of those challenges last night but kept showing for the ball and kept taking players on. Would have been easy to hide or ask to come off.

We should all be very proud of that last night. We can’t play pretty passing football every game and control games from the 1st to the last minute.

I am with you on this one. I enjoyed it far more than the Sporting game and it felt like there was some real jeopardy in the game. Whilst the referee could undeniably have been much better, I think that performance will stand us in much better stead, going forward, than a 0-2 nice and friendly game would have done.

Apparently UEFA are looking at footage and assessing a 2 year European ban for city based on :

1. Grealish having hair that attacked an oppositions players hand

2. Sterling head butting Savic (as Savic reached down to tie his shoe laces.

3. Fodens physical attack both with the back of his head AND rolling into an opposing players leg off the pitch.

4. City staff refusing to take drug test DNA samples from opposition players in the form of saliva post match and

5. The crowd booing the anthem.

In other news the EFL are looking at docking 9 points from Derby for the distgusting scenes in Madrid last night.
