Atmosphere - 2023/24

My theory with Arsenal is that they're so ashamed at the state of that Ashburton lot who bang their drum all game, that they purposely try and out sing them.

Most of the noise at Arsenal comes from the opposite end to the 'ultras'.
That’s exactly what it is.

Look at the little group of them dressed like Ricky Gervais up one end near the away fans with their little drum and absolutely nobody in their stadium joining in with their songs other than their own little group… then look up the other end of the stadium where the entirety of Level 1 is stood up and singing traditional Arsenal songs with new ones interspersed.

It’s like a ‘we don’t want this Europop bullshit in our ground, we’ll show them we don’t need it to make a good atmosphere’.

That Ashburton Army have got a bad reputation amongst a lot of core Arsenal fans. Some wanted then banned from the Emirates after it emerged that there was a lot of antisemitism amongst the group last season.

Thought our away support was decent against west ham considering what an awful away end it is. And as the kids call it these days, there were 'limbs' for that 2nd goal.
Great camera shots on the fans when Bernardo scored and ran to our end.

City v Fulham.

Newcastle V Bournemouth.

The atmosphere is really flat. You can hear a pin drop at times. Hardly any chanting. Just moans, grumblings, frustration, etc. 0-0 at half-time.

Games like Fulham, Bournemouth etc don't only affect the atmosphere at the Etihad. They affect the atmosphere at every PL ground, even ground with supposed good atmospheres.
Yeah I agree. Although the Newcastle fans were brilliant at the end of the game yesterday, getting behind them trying to hold onto a 1-0 lead. Their ‘we’re all going to Milan chant’ at the death was sung by what seemed like the whole ground on their feet clapping. Thought it was really good and fitted the game and the situation for the end of that game but also the anticipation for their first CL game for a while.

Like you say, it was flat for the most part but when the team really needed them they were there.

That’s one of the good things about English football atmospheres. The fans are engrossed in the game and a lot of the time the atmosphere represents what’s going on, on the pitch.

It’s what makes our atmosphere unique and special compared to other kinds of atmospheres around the world. And then when it comes to the big games, that’s where our atmospheres take off to another level and the uniqueness of them makes them the best for me.

You can’t beat a top English atmosphere when they really get going.

Watching the denouement of the 'winner takes all' Davis Cup tennis tie between the doubles teams of GB and France at Manchester's AO Arena.

In between every game some stupid woman is squawking at high pitch to 'encourage' the crowd to 'make it a cauldron', all the while some herberts are firing t-shirts into the crowd. And between every point there's an 'Oompah Band' playing in the crowd.

I know I'm a miserable Old Git but this sort of stuff does my head in. You can't even take a moment or two to reflect on the play you've just seen.

It's the modern way I suppose. But I swear if this sort of garbage 'match day experience' is foisted upon us in footy (O Lord, please spare us!), I'll be leading a campaign of civil disobedience..

I just switched it over after reading this and saw Dan Evans asking the crowd for more
. So if it's what players want, it's fine for me

I agree. In the deciding set of the deciding rubber, GB were love 40 down and 4-5 against. The crowd helped GB to produce a minor miracle and win the match.

The atmosphere was brilliant. It was also a brilliant week for Manchester having the Davis Cup in the City.

I agree too. The fact that it went to the final set tie-break after the GB lads hung in there to get a chance to win made for an incredible atmosphere in the Arena and set up an amazing moment in sporting history.

It's just that I draw the line at having a bunch of f**king herberts in an 'Oompah Band' and so on continuously blaring in your ear in the seats nearby!

Football, please don't ever go down this path..!!

Correct. Went to Klanfield for a game v Bournmouth a couple of years ago. Was a far worse atmosphere than a similar game at the Etihad.
