Atmosphere tonight

The Etihad is an unhappy place for those who care about the atmosphere but are isolated in areas that almost forbid it (aka 95% of the stadium). Sing and you'll get looked at funny, told to shut up, or if you dare rise to your feet (god forbid), told to sit down - that's if a steward hasn't already confronted you after 10 seconds on your feet. A few of us in 107 got up yesterday and sang, I looked to my right and I swear every person was sat in silence looking like this.

What a miserable bunch too many of our fans are nowadays. Even against Chelsea - CHELSEA - many couldn't get excited.

And the turnout is never the problem... look across Europe, in most leagues stadiums are half empty or more but there's always a group of fans making a racket.

Well this is what happens when you turn into a family club. We already were one years ago, now it's quickly evolving into Wacky Warehouse/Botany Bay.

I could never really be doing with the pre-match nonsense. People are supposed to be there to watch football, not see some shitty boyband sat on a stage outside the ground.

People will ask how is that even relevant? But it's just an example of how the club is trying too hard. And in the end, this is where the "Sit down and don't swear" etiquette comes in. Eventually you just drive fans away.

Watch it on tele pal or maybe we should have a tele room at the stadium, going to live sport is about taking in and contributing to the event , not taking a packed lunch and shouting bravo , I'm not on about standing the whole game just showing a bit of passion .

Bet you don't even fucking go.........if you do where were you last night?
You talking to me city stoke I was there last night and had a great time at hull with some atmosphere, I was in Summerbies for 6 hoping to get the build up vibe that was spoilt because of that shite brass band.

The pizza scoffing was funny though.

If you were there last night why weren't you stoking the atmosphere up wherever you were sat? You sound like you know the score and reckon we're all moaning, sat down, don't sing and eat prawn sandwiches.

None of which I do.

Like I said a bit of consideration to all supporters, not just the ones with the same perspective as you. If someone wants to take a packed lunch to the game and shout bravo then good luck to them. Not my business to tell them how to behave at the game.

Exactly, I have no problem with people who want to sit and watch in silence that's up to them.

Only time I have a problem is when some of those silent folk turn round and give me evils because I've expressed my view.

City stoke I was in the family stand singing with one other fella, being looked at as if I was some kind of yob scumbag, fed up of trying to get it going, as son as the singing section start I join in and try and do my bit but the gloomy faces looking at you drive you mad, even did a bit of willy in willy out , not even a smile. But the noise when yaya misplaced a pass kin ell nearly took the roof off.

The Belfast bloke who tried to wipe away the chillies ...made me laugh

I know cheating bastard , but at least miss pike came to meet her fella in the bar , what an arse she has fantastic, there's a point maybe miss pike could do a chicks in city kits stint on the stage surely that would improve the mood

Let's look at this objectively...

1) We're a pretty well supported club, and we know we DO get 47K for PL home games, and even the less attractive games manage to attract (say) 44K.

2) We don't have an especially affluent fan base, but we can't be any worse off than Liverpool, Newcastle, Spurs, Villa, etc etc. Across 47K fans, there's a big spread of income, but as a group, we just can't be notably worse off. So whilst I accept that costs are very tight for many fans, it can't be specifically down to this.

3) A LARGE number of away fans are finding tickets amongst the home fans. I'm not talking the odd one or two, I could count about 20 close to me! (CB stand, 123). On top of that, there's a large number of tourists with cameras turning up too. On top of that, there are unfamiliar faces who appear to be City supporters (who may or may not be casual supporters, or just relocated for CL games).
How are these away fans getting tickets (and in such large numbers)

Is there any chance at all, that our ticketing system is (in part) to blame? I'm not suggesting it is, I'm just asking the question - is there anything different about the way we handle ticketing that's influencing things.

4) The experience on European nights has been very disappointing. Not just the performances on the pitch, the atmosphere in general has been pretty low key. I can only speak for myself, but being surrounded by so many away fans and tourists just kills the atmosphere stone dead. If we score, and you turn to celebrate - there's nobody to share your excitement... it creates an atmospheric vacuum (technically an oxymoron, I think).

5) We're not a specifically fickle fan base. So I struggle to believe that a relatively poor showing in CL is causing fans to not bother turning up. Plenty are turning up against Stoke, so it's hard to believe they wouldn't show against Roma.

There's a root cause. There has to be. It's just a matter of figuring out what that is. But I don't believe for one minute there's something 'odd' about City fans. It has to be something odd about the way we are selling the tickets, or marketing CL, or the experience being offered. Walking into the game last night was like walking into a League Cup fixture. That cannot be right.
