Let's look at this objectively...
1) We're a pretty well supported club, and we know we DO get 47K for PL home games, and even the less attractive games manage to attract (say) 44K.
2) We don't have an especially affluent fan base, but we can't be any worse off than Liverpool, Newcastle, Spurs, Villa, etc etc. Across 47K fans, there's a big spread of income, but as a group, we just can't be notably worse off. So whilst I accept that costs are very tight for many fans, it can't be specifically down to this.
3) A LARGE number of away fans are finding tickets amongst the home fans. I'm not talking the odd one or two, I could count about 20 close to me! (CB stand, 123). On top of that, there's a large number of tourists with cameras turning up too. On top of that, there are unfamiliar faces who appear to be City supporters (who may or may not be casual supporters, or just relocated for CL games).
How are these away fans getting tickets (and in such large numbers)
Is there any chance at all, that our ticketing system is (in part) to blame? I'm not suggesting it is, I'm just asking the question - is there anything different about the way we handle ticketing that's influencing things.
4) The experience on European nights has been very disappointing. Not just the performances on the pitch, the atmosphere in general has been pretty low key. I can only speak for myself, but being surrounded by so many away fans and tourists just kills the atmosphere stone dead. If we score, and you turn to celebrate - there's nobody to share your excitement... it creates an atmospheric vacuum (technically an oxymoron, I think).
5) We're not a specifically fickle fan base. So I struggle to believe that a relatively poor showing in CL is causing fans to not bother turning up. Plenty are turning up against Stoke, so it's hard to believe they wouldn't show against Roma.
There's a root cause. There has to be. It's just a matter of figuring out what that is. But I don't believe for one minute there's something 'odd' about City fans. It has to be something odd about the way we are selling the tickets, or marketing CL, or the experience being offered. Walking into the game last night was like walking into a League Cup fixture. That cannot be right.
