The deafening music before the game kills any pre-match atmosphere.
Secondly, it's not just a matter of no standing areas, it's a matter of the type of supporter who doesn't come because there are no standing areas.
Thirdly, an increasing proportion of those who attend are middle-class types who tend to be quiet, like the old Main Stand used to be at Maine Road. At MR that type of supporter was basically down one side - now they occupy huge chunks of the whole ground.
Fourthly - corporate areas. Raise lots of cash admittedly, but add zero to the atmosphere.
I think people who dream of bringing back atmosphere like it was at Maine Road on a good day/night are pissing in the wind. It won't happen, sorry lads.
