Ballon d'Or 2023 | Haaland finishes 2nd

Ballon d’Or is a French, or francophone, award. This has favoured PSG’s Messi lately, but unlikely to play well with French or PSG football fans now. Also how the votes go: Ribéry and Grizemann have both got more they should without the understandable French inclinations of the judges. If he scores in the final, expect the award will go to Mahrez.

Messi's had his full quota, deservedly so. An astounding player over his whole career, no question. Perhaps the greatest of all time.
Has he even had a particularly good season, apart from the WC (which he didn't exactly win on his own)?
At the risk of repeating myself: if we win the CL — Kev, all fucking day long.
I agree but my list is what will happen probably

The judges are the manager and captain of every team no?

Historically, it was founded by a football magazine, of course. And as its name indicates, it was a French initiative. And I think historically it was closely linked from the outset of the European Cup (which has since become the Champions League). Only one year separates the two things, and I don't for one second believe that's a coincidence (the Wiki entries, for what they're worth, don't indicate a specific connection).
I don't say it's impossible to win it if you are not attached to a club that's won the European Cup or the CL — there've been spectacular examples to the contrary, starting with Stanley Matthews — but it does tend to be pretty firmly connected, and if anything, that tendency has become stronger in recent decades.
If you scrutinise it carefully, the link is stronger with performance in domestic league/winning the CL, than with being a World Cup winner (if that's pretty much all you did that was notable, and I'd argue that Messi's performances with P.S.G. have been far from convincing this season, despite the fact that they are, for the umpteenth time, French champions). Charlton in ’66 is an arguable exception. United only ended up fourth in the league, (although they had won it the previous season). They didn't win the F.A. Cup either.
That is why in my view it's nailed on that if we win on Saturday a City player will get it. Who will it be? Who knows? Scott Carson, perhaps? The dressing room joker, what's his name again?
If Inter win, the call becomes perhaps slightly more problematic.

Optimistic blue tinted lens, I really want Haaland to win Balon d’Or over Messi, but having known Messi was awarded his first Balon at the age of 22 years 11 months while Haaland is nearing 23 next month, doesn’t do justice to compare Haaland over Messi, because Messi was earlier and younger cue Argentina. It’s apples and oranges.

Pele and Maradona and the old Ronaldo are true greats and World Cup. Messi is likely in this mould. S Tier.

The others are in A Tier, and Haaland is rightly so. Who knows but we do hope that Haaland develops his prime.

Messi just had better chances and football at a young age.

But I would want Haaland to get Balon d’Or because it has been too many years since a footballer has been a prodigal anomaly so young.

Disregard my own comparison, I got my first comparison wrong.

So yes, I want and believe that Haaland should get this next Balon d’Or, because comparing before the age of 23…

Messi scored 186 goals. Haaland scored more than 200 so far.

Messi did fewer hattricks than Haaland at that age. Currently Haaland is on 17.
