Marcel Desailly bossed it in 1994 and came 9th. Anchor men don't win it, and that was when it was Europeans only.
 
Messi will win it, the voting system is ridiculous, the captain and a random journalist of every country in the world gets a vote. The Sri-Lankan guy voted for fucking Trent one year lol. In fairness he was a cricket reporter and was bemused at even being asked but just shows how bizarre it is.

Interesting. The only issue is the inclusion of the 11 Messi goals and assists in international friendlies, which are not competitive fixtures.

Messi has had a better seaosn than many give him credit for, but there are better players than him in the big European leagues, including Mbappe.

He will win it though, and it will be because of the world cup and as his retirement present.
 
It should be one of Haaland, Rodri, or Alvarez…

But it’ll be Messi because it’s a sentimental popularity contest, not an empirical assessment of the player that had the best overall performance over 12 months.
 
Rodri should be our player with the biggest shout.

He’s had two incredible seasons. This season he’s been the best, and most consistent with it, player in Europe.

Name any player who plays more consistently at a high level as Rodri does?
 
In a World Cup year for better or for worse, the WC plays a significant part in the Ballon d’Or voting. Probably a bigger part than it should - it was a huge part of why Modric was able to break the Messi and Ronaldo monopoly in 2018.
For that reason alone, I suspect Haaland , KDB and Rodri will all miss out and it will go to Messi. Had any of those had just a half-decent WC, they would be in with a good shout.

Probably thought it was a competition for best ground and went for Trent bridge
