FA rejects Mario Balotelli red card appeal

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli will serve a three-match ban after the club's appeal against his sending-off at West Brom was rejected.

Balotelli was shown a straight red card for seemingly kicking Youssuf Mulumbu during City's 2-0 win at The Hawthorns.

The Italian international will now miss the Manchester derby on Wednesday, the visit of Birmingham on Saturday and a trip to Fulham the following Sunday.

Balotelli had scored twice and picked up a yellow card before his dismissal.

There was no way the appeal was going to work, it was clearly bookable (which in itself would have been a red card and a one match ban). Can you imagine the scenario at FA Headquarters:-

"Ok, this Balotelli thing, it's not a straight red really is it"

"Nah, it's a yellow card, but it's not a red"

"Ok, but we can't give him a yellow card for it, it's red or nothing at this stage"

"So we give him nothing"

"Can't do that, if he'd been booked then it was a second yellow and he'd have been sent off"

"So if we recind it completely he gets away without any ban at all, when we're all agreed he should serve a one match ban for two yellow cards?"

"Yes"

"Then we uphold the red card, better he serves an unwarrented three match ban then escapes a one match ban totally"

"Doesn't that seem unfair?"

"Yeah, but this is the English FA, fairness doesn't come into it, we just rigidly apply the rules"

"Ok, fair enough, next case, there's a United player sent off for killing an opponent with the corner flag and....."

"Recind it, probably deserved it"

"Agreed"

kocieleny will serve 2 match ban and balo will serve 3 match ban, why is that?

Koscielny's was 2 yellows so should be one match ban, however it's his second red this season so gets an extra game on top
i think it was straight red card, i saw the complete match

No Koscielny was a straight red for stopping a goal scoring opportunity which carries a 1 match ban, and an extra match for it being his second red card of the season....

Balotelli was sent off for violent conduct (which includes aiming a kick or punch at an opponent, it does not have to connect) which carries an automatic 3 match ban.....

He also has 3 yellow cards (Sundays one still counts towards the 5 yellows before December 31st = 1 match ban)......

Looking at the FA statement it would seem City DID appeal the length of suspension rather than the fact he was actually going to be suspended, no doubt claiming a 3 game violent conduct punishment for that was excessive in the extreme, obviously the FA weren't having any of it:-

'At a Regulatory Commission hearing today, a claim that the standard punishment is clearly excessive from Manchester City’s Mario Balotelli was dismissed. As a result, Balotelli will serve a three match suspension with immediate effect.'
