i dont think horse racing should be banned but i think the fences should be made smaller at the national. the high profile of the event coupled with horse deaths does the sport no favours.
this is not the answer if the fences are smaller the horses go faster so there would be more deaths that is why there is also deaths in big hurdle races
can we not make them small hurdle races then ?

There are deaths fairly regularly in flat racing.
Flat racing, for the benefit of those who don't follow racing, does not involve either hurdles or fences.
So basically horses can die when they run.
As can greyhounds.
Or humans.
So let's ban running and we will all live happily ever after.

sorry meant the grade of race not obstacle size

surely making the fences smaller minimises the risks. if you read the title of the thread , its about the national mate. excuse the pun but theres no need for your high horse ;-)

Do you know this for a fact or are you just speculating? I've seen lots of horses in the wild or at rest, and I'm yet to see any that just voluntarily hop over 5-foot-high obstacles for shits and giggles.

It's a serious question; do wild horses jump over these sorts of obstacles? Do race horses jump over these sorts of obstacles in their 'free' time?

I'm honestly curious.

Of course it should be banned

Something that was deemed entertainment 200 years ago isn't relevant now - especially the amount of deaths involved

Always good to have an expert on hand to tell us exactly what is and isn't relevant nowadays.
I assume you would also ban show jumping, harness racing, dressage, three day eventing, and gymkhana's as well?
Why stop there?
We no longer need rag and bone men,so should we not use horses for any kind of work either?
Or use them as horse-drawn carriages for weddings and funerals?
Because they die doing all of these things too.
In fact,to be on the safe side, maybe we should not even let them run around a field in case they fall over.
Let's just keep them in a padded stall where they can't move, so that there is no risk of injury whatsoever.

Hardly relevant

And where did I say horses shouldn't be ridden? The way horses are pushed beyond their capabilities to make something 'attractive' to a baying audience is perfectly acceptable to you it seems

Last years winner couldn't even attend the winners enclosure due to exhaustion

Don't twist the opinion of the many on here to fit in win your usual rants.

So the many are automatically right, are they?
They know next to nothing about horse racing, but their opinion, based on sheer ignorance,is valid, because they are in the majority on a thread on a football website?
Flawless logic.
Do you eat meat?
If so,take a look in the dictionary at the word 'hypocrite',because just as horse racing isn't necessary, neither is eating meat.
Strangely enough,I don't see those clamouring to ban racing queueing up to firebomb McDonalds.

haha. i dont know much about horse racing as youve probably sussed. it just seems that most injuries are caused at the fences so as a layman i thought making them a touch smaller might minimise the risk.

I can read, so I understand that. But it's hardly natural surroundings, is it?

Do they display this sort of behaviour (jumping over multiple 5-foot+ high obstacles in a short space of time) in the wild?

Most will run around it if there is the option.
