Basel (H) Post Match Thread

I found it quite remarkable that he didn't take the kick. He had a string of free kicks a couple of seasons ago from probably the same blade of grass, and each one sailed into the top corner. I don't know what Pep thought he might do. We all know that the game is driven at just slightly quicker than walking pace when Yaya has a central role, and I think that he feels that his status will prevent him from being tackled, pressed, and harried, and I feel he thinks that opposition players will part like the Red Sea and allow him to drive at the heart of the defence. Not any longer, sadly.
Agreed. I also think it was a bit of unfair to expect Foden to carry him (which is what happened). Ya Ya was a burden to the younger players instead of being an inspiration. It's not really fair to play him any more. At his peak Ya Ya was as good as Colin Bell and he deserves respect. It was a painful watch and everyone around me was cringing when he got the ball. He wasn't being slated by anyone it was just difficult to watch a legend who is finished.

It was fucking garbage. And the players should be ashamed of their performance. And this is the place to say so.

but the only thing which takes the gloss of anything is those fucking ****s in the ground booing it

I feel no kinship for any **** which did that, the season we are having.

I'm growing to dislike a decent number of City fans.
I know that we lost our way a bit in the second half and the match sort of fizzled out.
I am not sure what the booing was for but it wouldn't have done the players morale any good, nobody should be booing them.
Remember, there were a lot of young lads out there doing their best against a good team.
The result, although disappointing, wasn't so important, but the lessons learned from the match are of far more value.
So many fans have said to give up and coming youngsters an opportunity, and I agree, but don't boo them if they don't match up to your expectations!
I thought that the Basle fans were excellent (they even sung the Uwe Rosler song!), though how did they manage to get the flares in?
Our chanting was not at its best, so we were
beaten in the stands as well as on the pitch!

YAYA ... he is now a joke. This is not a knee jerk reaction to last night ..

He comes on the pitch for warm up and to start a game and looks like he has just run a marathon. Body language is awful, must be such a lift for the opposition seeing his name on the starting 11.

He doesn't pass ball forward, and other players are now following he example. When Gundogan is passed the ball and his first thought is to pass it straight back to where it came, its NOT good enough from him. John Stones ..... awful again, where is the John Stones gone we had before his injury ? He passes the ball and his movement is the backwards !!

YAYA time is up in my opinion, the others have youth on their side. Before they end up the same way.

YAYA, Thanks for your efforts over the years and the goal that have been so important, but time is up.

It's time to move on from the ZInchenko experiment at LB. He's done well aswhat can be expected as a fill-in but last night he was awful and against Chelsea he could have easily have seen red for that stupid challenge in the first half which could have cost us dearly. Nothing personal against him but he isn't a LB and is weak physically and defensively.
You are unduly harsh on the guy who I think on balance has done well in after all what is an enforced experiment.

Despite Pep wanting to see it differently, it was bound to be a long 90 minutes with a team of players being rusty or inexperienced. And that haven't played together much. Furthermore it's hard to get the fully 100% concentration and dedication when you defend a 4-0 lead and score after 8 minutes and nearly add a second a few minutes later. Everytime we have rotated a lot of players, it hasn't turn out well (Wolves/Bristol/Shaktar, now Basel).

It's good Pep wasn't happy with the 2nd half and the passing for the passing. That is when tiki-taki gets boring. No desire to get foreward or take a risky pass to get things going. Just the endless side- and backpasses. So maybe it has been another lesson coming at a moment when the result didn''t really matter. I'm sure we will get our momentum back at Stoke. We are through to the next round and maybe we should simply draw a strong team.

I can forgive any defeat. What I cannot stand is sloppy indifference and a lack of basic quality on the ball.

Stones has somehow managed to morph back, looks totally gun shy about backing himself with a pass forward.

Thank goodness Mendy is closer to fitness and we can avoid Zinchenko and Danilo playing much longer.

I'm sorry but I just think Zinchenko is good enough defensively, every time I've seen him in action he nearly always fucks up. He's clearly a decent passer of the ball and obviously has pace but he's no good as a full back in my opinion.

i was thinking this summer could be the quietest for some time regarding the window. but after last night if this was our so called second team i could be wrong Whilst it may just be a dead rubber. surely for some it was an ideal situation to give food for thought in PEPS planning for Monday. instead if they were selected on last nights performance we would struggle.i know its early to say but Laporte and Stones look the least impressive partnership
