Bayern Munich (A) | Post Match Thread

They ran us ragged for long periods and we struggled to get forward or control the ball. Our dogged defence was great but if any of their many chances had gone in our nervy opening could have slid into meltdown. So interpreting that as our intended game plan is pushing it a bit imo.
A great result but their pace exposed some of our limitations. RM is no pushover so let’s not get giddy .get to Wembley don’t relax and hand the scum another trophy.

You don’t come into an away game against Bayern Munich and not come under major pressure. It’s not a negative to our team, it’s just the reality of how football works.

My half time post remains my stance:

Some shit analysis in here. Bayern away is one of the toughest fixtures in world football.

We’ve gone into this game with a 3-0 lead and we were always going to have to weather a storm for long periods. A lot of teams would be a couple of goals down already under this kind of pressure.

These games are very much about survival and a dogs of war approach as much as they are about playing perfect football.

The pattern from recent big fixtures, inc Bayern and Liverpool, is that we come on strong in the 2nd half. We weren’t the better side by much if at all in either of those two games but by the end of 90 minutes it was City firmly in control.

Hahahaha I said exactly the same as points 3 and 4 to my mate straight after the final whistle last night

I hope he learns from them delaying the pen and then missing it. He looked impatient to get on with it and ended up rushing. Needs to wait for the ref and then walk away, start his routine again and compose himself. You can bet Real will do the same to try and put him off if he gets one against them.

Don't believe the hype, we are nowhere near previous levels.

Timing is everything and we may just have it on our side, but ignore the hype train.

We got a chasing last night, certainly first half and were let off the hook.

Dias and Bernie had to compensate for some very below-par showings from Ake, Gundo, Kev and Rodri.

Still huge games to come in between and would have preferred Madrid at home for first leg, like Bayern, try and wipe them out.

No away goal means that whole playing home second is no advantage.

I don't think there's too much hype. The media are building talk of the treble, the players are enjoying their win and allowing themselves to talk about it. But behind closed doors it will be parked now, ready for the Cup semi on Saturday.

I don't agree with your assessment of last night. We didn't need to go and thrash them. We stayed deep to cover their attacks and we played on the counter. Job done. They're a very good side. They'd won every game in a group with Barca and Inter. They beat PSG home and away and they'd barely conceded all tournament. We restricted them to pot shots largely with our excellent defensive work and we took our chances. That's what you have to do, and what we didn't against Real.

Same needed for the Bernabeu. Dig in, work hard and who cares if we entertain or play poorly if the scoreline works for us?

No away goals, but those Real fans at home sensed blood when they got their first goal last season and momentum swung significantly. If we need a comeback I'd back us in front of our home fans. If we need to dig in or get some luck then fan pressure on the officials, booing Real at every touch and doing our best to drag the team over the line. It works much better this way. It means we avoid going back there and potentially having the same fate. Go there, stay in the tie then bring them back for a thrashing.

Thought the first game was very open and both teams had decided to go toe to toe. They missed there chances we made many more and took 3.
Return leg with everything to lose for us and nothing for them but to go for it we played more reserved and did not take any major risks. It was a very good, solid professional performance and although they had the odd chance and the pace of Coman caused us problems I always felt if we needed to apply pressure the other way we were more than capable of doing that - but were taking no risks.
Only thing it really highlighted for me was what we already knew, we lack pace at the back when we play without walker and if we don't quickly move Stones back into a defensive position when out of possession we have gaps that can be exploited if teams are good enough. The latter tends only to be an issue if our passing game is off or if someone gets caught in possession which does'nt happen often.
Felt for Ake who has been superb but he must have been at full tilt a few times chasing Coman so not surprised.

1 - Real, Milan, Inter and City are left. And we are the ones who are feared.
2 - There was a point where if you'd told me that I'd be dreading an injury to Nathan Ake I'd have thought that you were on glue.
3 - I have a belief in the Law of Averages, so Drawing this match is a strange relief to me as I'd felt that our winning streak had to wobble at some point and this was a good place for it.
4 - Likewise with Erling's missed pen. If he had to miss one, this was the one.
5 - We owe Real a beating. We were superior to them in both legs last year.

Number 5 is my worry. Liverpool said the same ahead of the final last year. They were out for revenge. They didn't get it. We'd be foolish to let the past influence how we play this game. Learn from it, know they're never beaten, but don't play as if there's a score to settle. I'm glad we're away first, it means we don't go there for a second year in a row and have that in the back of our minds. We know there will be a second leg to come. Pep will try his best to make it a one game tie. He'll do the same as last night. Play conservatively, try to win the game, but be organised and make sure we don't lose it.

Very much this. Bayern are an excellent side missing a striker. They play possession football, they press well and have real pace out wide. In Coman, Sané and Gnabry they have brilliant wingers. Kimmich, Musiala and Goretzka are excellent in midfield. Thankfully Upmecano was dreadful over both legs but Bayern were a very good side.

I genuinely believed that they were the best side left in the competition (bar ourselves) when the draw was made. Nothing over the two legs changed my mind.

I fancy usagainst Real if we can get the balance right on the flanks. Last year we destroyed Real at times but our weaknesses in full back positions kept them in the tie. The fact that the second leg was away last time meant the home crowd kept Real going.

If we can keep our best players fit we should beat Real.
I agree. Over the last few years, I have become sick of 'small margins' going against us in the CL. I don't care if we don't dominate every game - I just want us to bloody win the thing!
