Spot on.
Last night on Anthony Sher night on BBC 4 they showed The 2014 RSC production of Henry IV part I. I saw it at the time and was well worth watching it again last night.
Back in Elizabethan times, economic misery was fueling populist anger, partisan rancour dominated, people knowingly accepted being lied to by their lords and masters, and there were outbreaks of bubonic plague to contend with.
So maybe it wasn't all that much different from now, in a way. And with his uncanny insight, Shakespeare, of course, shone a spotlight on the arrogant incompetence, the mendacity and viciousness of some of the rulers back then, as well as the militant stupidity of their admirers.
So it is maybe no surprise to find that Dorries wants to do away with an institution that has done so much to popularize the works of our greatest playwright.
Of course, subversive television is available from other sources these days. For example, David Simon seems to have no problems getting shows made that fall into that category. So I am not sure that what I have said is sufficient by itself to make the case for preserving the BBC.
Plus, I still haven't forgiven them for making that fucking documentary about Liverpool winning the Premiership.
On the whole, though, I would like them to carry on as they are now if that's possible, especially because it will piss off the right people, like Tory cunts (have recently decided that they are
all cunts without exception), DM readers, twats who use the word 'woke', and other rubicund-complexioned types.
