I think, on the contrary, he’ll be huge for us.
Just look at Vin: that dreadful run of injuries, that went on and on and on. Everybody, in their heart of hearts, thought that that was it. And then, look at him on Thursday night! A nearly flawless performance against the most physical and fastest side in the country. And Ben Mendy has the huge advantage of youth on his side. These things happen in football. No really, I have no worries. And as for the defending side of his game, that is something that can be tutored, to an extent. And it will be, under Pep. There was nothing much wrong with his performance as a defender at Anfield, come to that.
If we could have Ben Mendy and Kev back now, or rather for the next league game, and both fit to the end of the season, I’d honestly be very comfortable about us retaining the league title. Both very dynamic players, in their different ways, who would give exactly what we need to go on a hell of a run and sprint past the dippers. Obviously we can’t, so it’s going to be a bit more difficult. But both available would be perfect at this point in the season.

Vincent had made hundreds of City appearances before the chronic injuries took a real hold on his career with us.

But in fact Vin’s injury record before coming to us from Germany was pretty poor. Mendy’s record, by comparison, was significantly better. All I’m saying is that these things aren’t set in stone. And that some people are writing off Mendy a bit prematurely.

Maybe so, gdm. That, then, was the triumph of faith over evidence.
That’s fair comment, up to a point. It seemed possible, maybe even likely that he would struggle to regain meaningful fitness, but it was never certain. That’s all I meant, and certainly not claiming powers of prescience that I don't possess.
