You should never ever change the system to accommodate one player, we should have learnt that lesson with Toure. The 4-3-3 has worked perfectly, why change to 4-2-3-1 to accommodate Mendy, just no. Mendy needs to adapt to our style, choose his forward runs more intelligently (in terms of movement, frequency and and defensive responsibility) and he needs to be more consistent defensively but hopefully that is just a rustiness from lack of game time because he’s shown he can do it against Liverpool away.I don't even know why it has to happen, the ONE time they played together (I think they've only played once), they were both monsters on our left side against Liverpool.
Sane can play out wide and transition to inside, he's not just all assists, he's a great finisher.
Especially with an aging David, and no perfect Dinho replacement, I think if we transitioned to two DM's and let Sane/Mendy (supported by an extra DM defensively) on the left-side instead of Sane/Silva, it can work and be balanced.
I wouldn't change the system for one player, this is a slight change in formation for 3 players: Aging Silva, Dinho and integrating Mendy. You should never ever change the system to accommodate one player, we should have learnt that lesson with Toure. 4-2-3-1 lets us play with an attacking Mendy (and less attacking threat from Silva),and rely less on Dinho using a double pivot.
With Danilo showing how great he has been, It'd be great to see Danilo and Mendy bombing down the wings every now and then. The double pivot has been used in this game as well, Kevin and Gundogan were doing that for most of the game with Silva as the 10.
I agree with your points, there is perhaps some middle ground to be made between the two. I also don't believe formation is vital to how we play, our style doesn't depend on a formation I believe.I understand what you’re saying however the only time I’ve seen us use a double pivot is against Liverpool (A) with Bernardo Silva. However that was more to do with overcoming the press of Liverpool’s narrow front 3 rather than to accommodate a specific player, as it was allowing us to keep 4 vs 3 in the middle.
As long as it’s used as a tactical advantage then it could be very useful, I just disagree with changing the team shape/formation/patterns of play which we’re so good at just to get someone in the team.
A civil discussion on bluemoon, that’s got to be a first!! I’m with you on the formation not being vital, we’ve proved it with the 3 at the back (at times anyway).I agree with your points, there is perhaps some middle ground to be made between the two. Just looking for a balance and solution to the aging Silva and Dinho problem, AND integrating Mendy, and this was my thought. Good discussion and points btw.
I truly believe Leroy can reach Cristiano Ronaldo levels, or like 95% of that.A civil discussion on bluemoon, that’s got to be a first!! I’m with you on the formation not being vital, we’ve proved it with the 3 at the back (at times anyway).
Looking forward to having Mendy back though, let’s just hope Pep finds a way of playing him and not restricting Leroy. Although that’s probably because I have a man crush on Leroy.
Never heard of him, he must have been shit.I truly believe Leroy can reach Cristiano Ronaldo levels, or like 95% of that.
