Benjamin Mendy settles tax bill with HMRC

Footballing bankruptcies are normally on the back of divorces. Mendy was different as his income was pulled and he would still have a huge mortgage and massive tax bill to pay - and he obviously didn’t have easily accessible assets to cover them until the house sold. Once sold he was fine.

I’ve seen closely loads of celebrity bankruptcies over the years. Normally young soap stars or pop stars earning a huge income in the first year or two - buying properties cars luxury items with huge monthly payments - and thinking they are fine for the tax bill at they will earn similar amount of income the following year.

But then success dries up - their earnings decline and suddenly there isn’t enough cash to cover the outgoings or pay the tax bill.

I’ve seen high profile soap stars doing great - but then written out of the show and the whole pack of cards collapses.

Surely the majority of Mendys income would have been taxed at source? How do they get stung with these bills outside of that?

At a guess (as ive not seen his personal account) there will be PAYE for basic salary and a 'MENDY LTD' will exist for image rights/other payments. It will be those payments that could be route through various channels and eventually caused his tax issues.

Up until his injury, I loved Benjamin Mendy.

And it wasn’t just me; the general opinion on here was that we’d obtained an absolute beast of a left-back.

When I saw him for the first time at Etihad, I thought he was Yaya.

I know some of his crosses were hit too hard, but he had some left foot.

It’s just a shame the way things turned out.

Always seemed to be an excitable chap. Hope he manages to rebuild his life somewhere. Can't have been easy for him.
Silly, naive, boy thinking he was above the law.

Celebs and footballers must be thick not paying their tax bills of all things
Fancy cars, mansions, clothes and holidays, they spend cash like it's going out of style.

Fools are easily parted from their cash.

I thought he was shite. A fullback who couldn't defend. Mind you we've had a few of them.
