Bernardo’s been a proper numpty here. There shouldn’t be an issue, it’s very clearly a light hearted jibe between friends with no racial intent at all but we live in a world now where somebody will always try and find something to be outraged by. They get given extensive media training, it would have been made very clear to them what would cause controversy and what to avoid like the plague, he’s dropped a bollock here. whether it should or shouldn’t be an issue is sadly irrelevant.

I wonder if the same amount of coverage would be given to this if it was a black player saying this to mendy?

Or if a white or black player had made a comparison of say John Stones with a cartoon / caricature.

It is very dopey to have put this on social media though.

Awhile ago I worked with a lad who was called Paddy by everyone as that is what he wanted to be called. He went on one of those courses where you had to write your name on a piece of card and stick it on the front of your desk. He wrote Paddy. The guy in charge lectured him about how he was suffering from racism and he didn't know it. He tried insisting my mate change it to Patrick. My mate told him, rather abruptly that his name was Paddy and if the bloke didn't like it he didn't have to speak to him. The bloke ignored him all the course rather than say his name.

a few years ago, quite a few actually, i was giving a class to students on a Social Work course at a University. I asked where the chalk was for the black board, I was immediately told by them that i was not allowed to call it a black board, as it was to be referred to as a chalk board. I knew then where we were going with this.

I continued to call it a black board for the next six weeks, wish it had been green. sorry to digress.

Rappers use it all the time, as does Tarantino in several movies. It’s offensive but it’s also used as a parody to expose the bigotry within society, I don’t think Bosnianblue has any racist intentions with that post.

Rappers re-appropriated the word N***er into N***a. There’s a distinct difference between how both words have been used historically.

My husband who is black has been getting more and more pissed off about this as the day has gone because he thinks that the reaction to this sets the fight against racism back.
He's pissed off with organisations like Kick it Out and the FA trying to look as they are doing something about racism by looking into trivia like this. There is plenty of real racism out there but this is what they decide needs investigating if Kick it Out is "shocked" by this then they need to get out in the real world. He believes that if they make Bernardo go on some sort of course he should tell them to do one as it is a token gesture and he would be labelling himself as a racist who has to be saved by people who know better because they are offended but have never suffered real racism themselves. In his opinion for every person having a touch of the vapours on twitter there are people who took no offence at all who decides who is right or as he so charmingly put it "Don't speak for me and tell me what I should be fucking offended by". He really is fuming.

p.s. Just realised how hard it is to write someone else's view point so excuse the way the post reads.

I think that first paragraph nails it - I think it takes away from real racial issues for me.

For full disclosure I am white and pale so there are probably people better positioned on this than myself.

We know what argument you are trying to use but you are wrong and don't make sense at all. I am 100% sure you heard the word ****** many, many more times in movies than you've heard white trash. It's because that's what the art is about - to raise the issue sometimes and to depict that kind of people who used those words. Unless they are actually promoting those characters in good light, they are doing a job for society that you obviously fail to realize and understand.

A 6 game ban for Bernardo would be odd. Unfortunately if that came through it would look like the FA and Kick it Out are more concerned with looking like they care about racism than actually caring about racism (which was obvious to all). Which would go a long way to explaining why racism is still so prevalent at this point.

There's obviously merit to this whole issue but not handling it properly is just going to piss everybody off, of every perspective. On top of that the worst part of not handling this properly is that nobody's learning anything, which is a hugely missed opportunity.

There's a chance here for people to learn about some racist history and cultural insensitiveities and avoid making these mistakes in future, but everyone gets so wound up on all sides that rather than a nice discussion it just becomes a mud slinging contest.

Spot on, if someone called me a white piece of trash, I'd be a bit pissed off but wouldn't be screaming ' racist' 'racist' like the snowflakes are oh so quick to do nowadays.

There is a difference between racism against an ethnic minority and saying something disrespectful to white people. History has a lot to do with it.
