I don’t disagree with the sentiment of your post, but how did we do AFTER Nasri left ? And AFTER Silva left ?
Nasri was great for a brief period and in similar aspects in the game that are key to success with possession/attacking oriented sides, but when he fell off and showed the lack of desire you saw how poorly we performed under Pellegrini.
Yaya, still my favourite, when on top of his game was also beyond massive with ball retention, control and tempo dictation.
However, when Yaya dropped in work rate he also became a liability that left Fernandinho alone to mind the insanely wide gap for our already weak, slow or inconsistent back line.
So, reality is we were suffering with Nasri here at the end of his time, as was the case with Yaya for the opposite reasons we will miss Bernardo, because the man is dedicated on the pitch.
I highly doubt Bernardo will ever be a player like Nasri was to drop off in effort whilst possessing his qualities, and that is what we will miss sorely and is difficult to find.
A player with exceptional technical ability with high levels of agility and pace, who's a threat to score from anywhere, yet still selfless enough, possessing extremely high football intelligence, teamwork and work rate.
Not many out there like that.
Gundo and Merlin prior is perhaps the fairest comparison to importance in these areas to us since Pep arrived.
However, last season Bernardo stepped into replace Gundo as an even better version this past season.
Gundo was incredible 2 seasons ago with the goals and assists, when Bernardo was in the wilderness, but Gundo's aging had some big injuries and hasn't had the same agility pace, aggressive approach and work rate Bernardo has.
Notice how we were arguably more dominant and unbeatable if you ask me when Bernardo was on top of his game than even dare I suggest, Merlin.
Merlin is worshiped for all the right reasons, but Bernardo was a bigger goal scoring threat and more aggressive than Silva was. Silva had better vision and control but we didn't see the type of goals Bernardo scored, and wasn't really going to get stuck in like Bernardo does.
Phillips will likely be the player Pep will look to be the replacement or Bellingham if he continues his development.
But neither are where he is.
