Bert Trautmann - R.I.P

Wow. Suddenly what was seeming like a very exciting day of transfers and such has now been put into perspective. Even though he retired twenty-odd years before I was even born, I've been choked up all day since I heard the news. Horrible for it to have happened, but if his health really was degenerating as the stories claim it was then perhaps it was best that he was not made to suffer a longer period of health scares. I wish I'd had the chance to see him play but at least I can say that I am very proud and immensely honoured that he played for us and that to his dying day he remained a fervent Blue. The adulation that he received when he appeared at games was no less than he deserved.

To those who are lucky enough to have seen him play - was there ever a terrace chant for Trautmann, back in the 50s or 60s? If there was, it would be more than fitting to give it one final rendition on the first game of the season, I'd have thought.

Very sad news, he was always a big part of my personal relationship with City growing upalthough the nearest I ever got to him was outside the old social club and I didn't want to add to the throng vying for his autograph. I've been very touched reading through the tributes on here, and especially those from the non-City footballing fraternity, cheers lads.

I don't do RIP threads, and firmly believe there are too many on here.....however, this man was a legend, a true legend - he actually epitomises the word. Only when you look into his story do you realise how unworthy most of our recent footballing legends are. You only need to look at where Bert Trautmann came from and what he achieved to know the true meaning of the word.

So a heartfelt RIP from me, and I mean it for this guy.

Bert grew up in the western parts of Bremen, dominated by the harbour and shipbuilding industries, all closed a long time ago. Werder and Beck's brewery is all the local pride that's left (Beck's have been sold a Belgian beer multinational though). Funny enough Bert Trautmann never played for the big team in his home town, but for a small side called "Tura" (in midfield, by the way). They will have their first match of the season in a local cup competition next week, so I'm looking forward to attending and witness the minute of silence.

Read his book a few years back. Great footballer but even greater man. As has been said he did a lot to rebuild bridges after WW2 and it would be good if City could arrange to play a German team each pre-season for the Bert Trautmann Cup.

That's a great idea, GSW.

There are still too many in this country who hark back to the old stereotypes and this would be a way of continuing Bert's work to break them down.
