Very true. The man played a not insignificant role in building bridges between peoples who had been at war for large chunks of the previous four decades. When you add in that no one will ever again be allowed to play through an fa cup final with a broken neck it's going to take a heck of a lot to ever top Bert's story.Made me think, is there any City player whose story we know so well or enjoy telling or care so much about? There are some good ones, sure, but for me no one comes close, probably because Bert's story goes beyond football and because he forged a link with the people of Manchester where there was love on both sides.
